She Stole My Life Savings,Then Her Mother Left Me Everything

My father-in-law was dying, and the hospital was demanding payment for his surgery.

I rushed to the payment window and swiped my cardonly to be told insufficient funds.

I asked the clerk if there'd been some mistake. This was my salary and bonus account. It held every cent I'd saved over the past few yearseighty thousand dollars.

The clerk slid the card back across the counter, her voice dripping with disdain. "There's one dollar in this account."

I stood frozen. My first thought was my wife. I dialed her immediately. "Did you take the money from my account?"

Before she could answer, I heard Jacob James's voice in the background, practically giddy with excitement.

"Ruby Mason, this car is incredible! Thank you for such an amazing birthday giftI love you forever!"

My jaw tightened. Something dark and hot coiled in my chest.

"Yes, I took it," Ruby said, as casually as if she were discussing the weather. "It's Jacob's birthday. I bought him a car."

"Your father needs that money to survive. Without it, he'll die. Return the car. Now."

"Edgar Gilbert, it's just a few tens of thousands of dollars." Her voice sharpened. "Are you seriously cursing my father to die over this? I want a divorce!"

1.

The line erupted with Ruby's shrill accusations.

I couldn't see her face, but I could picture it perfectlythat wild-eyed look she got when she was ready to tear someone apart.

"Ruby, I'm not joking." I kept my voice steady, though my pulse hammered against my temples. "I'm standing at the hospital payment window right now. Your father needs emergency surgery. It's criticalthe hospital gave us half a day. If we don't pay in time, they'll refuse to operate."

I paused, letting each word land.

"He will die."

I laid out the situation as clearly as I could, praying she'd grasp the severity.

She said nothing.

"You like throwing tantrums," I continued, my tone dropping lower. "I've always let it slide. Never made a fuss. But you know meI would never joke about something like this. There's still time. Return the car and get to the hospital"

A cold laugh cut me off.

"Edgar, drop the act. Don't pretend you actually care about my father." Her voice turned icy. "He's always been perfectly healthy. And now you're suddenly telling me he needs emergency surgery? I'd have to be brain-dead to believe that."

"Let me make this crystal clear." Each word was a blade. "I already took your money and bought Jacob a car. Tonight, I'm celebrating his birthday with him. We'll probably drink. If I have too much, I'll get a hotel room. Don't wait up."

She paused, and I heard her take a breath.

"And stop calling me. I'm turning off my phone."

Click.

I called back.

The number you have dialed is powered off.

"Damn it!"

The curse tore out of me before I could stop it. I stood there, chest heaving, then forced myself to walk back to the hospital room.

Nurse Emily Carter had just finished drawing my father-in-law's blood. She glanced up as I entered. "Has the payment been submitted?"

I shook my head slowly, unable to meet her eyes.

She frowned. "The patient's condition is serious. Every minute we delay makes it worse."

"I'll figure it out," I said. "Soon."

The moment she left, my mother-in-law rushed over and seized my hands. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her voice trembling. "Edgar, why hasn't the payment gone through?"

"Mom... I'm sorry. I" The words caught in my throat. I exhaled slowly. "I tried."

"What happened?" Silvia Mason's grip tightened, her nails digging into my skin. "Edgar, tell me."

"Where's Ruby? Where did she go?"

Silvia's tears streamed down her face, her voice cracking with desperation.

I told her about how her daughter had secretly drained $800,000 from my account to buy her ex-boyfriend a car.

The words hit her like a physical blow. Her whole body began to tremble, curses spilling from her lips in a torrent of rage.

She nearly had a stroke right then and there.

"That wretched girl!"

"She's determined to destroy herself!"

"Edgar, pleasecall her for me."

"Of course."

I dialed Ruby's number immediately.

I expected her phone to be off. I wasn't holding out much hope.

But the line connected.

It rang a few times before she cut it off.

"She's not answering, Mom."

"Keep calling. Don't stop until she picks up!"

Silvia's jaw was clenched so tight I could see the tendons in her neck. Tears kept rolling down her cheeks.

"Alright."

I called again. And again.

After she rejected five or six attempts, Ruby finally answered.

The moment the call connected, I hit speakerphone.

"Edgar, have you lost your mind? Is there something wrong with your head?"

"I warned you earlierdo NOT call me again today. The second I turn my phone back on, you're blowing it up like a lunatic!"

"What is your problem?"

"Are you not going to be satisfied until I divorce you? Is that what you want?"

I caught a glimpse of Silvia's expression darkening with every venomous word her daughter spat.

When Ruby finally paused for breath, I said simply, "Your mom wants to talk to you."

"Ha! You never change, do you? The second I mention divorce, you drag my mother into it to guilt-trip me?"

"Today is David's birthday. I don't care if it's my mommy ancestors could crawl out of their graves and you still wouldn't scare me."

"What kind of thing is that to say?" Silvia's voice thundered through the speaker.

Ruby went quiet.

Then, tentatively: "...Mom?"

"Answer me. Did you take the $800,000 from Edgar's account?"

Ruby didn't answer the question.

Instead, she turned her fury on me.

"Edgar, you pathetic bastard! I used a little money and you ran crying to my parents? Seriously?"

"What did you promise me when we got married?"

"You said everything you earned was mine. That I could spend it however I wanted."

"All I did was hold you to your word. And now you're already whining about it?"

"Hah. Men."

"All talk when it suits you."

"Edgar, you disgust me."

"Shut your mouth!"

Silvia's roar cut through the air. Her voice shook with barely contained rage. "You listen to me. Return that car. Transfer the money back to Edgar. Your father needs it to survive."

"Mom, what did Edgar say to brainwash you?"

"You're actually helping him curse my father?"

Hearing Ruby accuse her own mother through the phoneI let out a disbelieving laugh.

Her first instinct wasn't concern for her father.

No. She assumed her mother and I were conspiring against her.

Silvia stood frozen, trembling so violently she couldn't speak.

"Hmph."

"I'm right, aren't I?"

"Don't treat me like I'm stupid. I'm not a child."

"Dad's perfectly fine. Why would anything be wrong with him?"

"Stop calling me."

Click.

She hung up.

"Call her." Silvia's voice was hoarse, barely a whisper. "Find out where she is."

"I'm going to kill her with my bare hands."

Her eyes glistened with tearsand beneath them, a fury that could burn the world down.

I nodded and kept calling Ruby.

Her phone was off.

"Mom, Ruby's phone is switched off. I can't get through."

"That heartless wretch!"

Silvia's roar echoed through the corridor.

There was nothing we could do. Without reaching Ruby, I couldn't get my money back.

We had no choice but to contact other relatives.

Fortunately, the surgery deposit wasn't astronomicaljust a few ten thousand dollars. Between all the relatives scraping together what they could, we managed to cobble together enough.

Once my father-in-law was wheeled into the operating room, Silvia paced back and forth outside the doors, wearing a groove into the linoleum.

I tried to comfort her. Told her everything would be fine. That her husband had always been blessed with good fortune.

The surgery dragged on for six hours, stretching well past nightfall.

When the surgeon finally emerged, exhaustion carved into every line of his face, Silvia scrambled to her feet and rushed over, grabbing his arm.

"Doctor, how did my husband's surgery go?"

The surgeon's expression was grim. He shook his head slowly. "I'm sorry. The patient's condition had deteriorated too much from the delay. The surgery... was not successful."

The words hit Silvia like a physical blow.

She crumpled to the floor, her face slack with disbelief, tears streaming down her cheeks in an endless river.

I hurried to help her up, then turned to the surgeon. "Is my father-in-law in immediate danger?"

"He has perhaps half an hour left."

The surgeon paused, his voice heavy. "If there's anything you want to say to him... you should do it now."

He let out a long sigh, then left with the nurse trailing behind him.

Minutes later, they wheeled my father-in-law out of the operating room.

I guided Silvia over, her face ashen, her body moving like a puppet with cut strings.

My father-in-law lifted one trembling hand, his voice barely above a whisper. "Darling... don't be sad. This was my fate. I've made my peace with it."

The next second, Silvia collapsed onto her husband's chest, her sobs tearing through the hallway.

Back in the hospital room, the two of them talked for over ten minutes.

Though really, it was mostly my father-in-law speaking while Silvia wept.

Until he mentioned their daughter.

Only then did Silvia's tears stop.

"She"

"Dad, Ruby's on her way right now."

I cut Silvia off before she could finish.

My father-in-law was hanging on by a thread. If I told him the truththat his daughter wasn't coming, that she was out celebrating her ex-boyfriend's birthday insteadit would kill him on the spot.

Silvia froze. She turned to look at me.

Then fell silent.

As the minutes crawled by, my father-in-law's breathing grew shallower, fainter. His voice dwindled until I had to lean in close just to hear him.

I knew the end was near.

"Son... in-law..."

"I'm here."

I rushed to his side.

"From now on... I'm counting on you."

"Take care of... them. My wife... and daughter."

"I have to... go... now."

I clasped his hand tightly and nodded, the motion fierce. "Dad, I promise. I will."

"Thank you."

Those two words seemed to drain the last of his strength.

A few seconds later, his eyes drifted closed.

Then came Silvia's wailraw, gutted, the sound of a heart being ripped in two.

That night, she stayed in the hospital room alone.

She wouldn't let anyone else in.

Not even me.

I could only watch through the small window in the door.

Silvia was washing her husband's body with painstaking care, gentle and thorough, before dressing him in clean, pressed clothes.

She seemed to be holding herself together. I allowed myself a small breath of relief.

Deep into the night, I dozed off in the chair outside the door.

A light touch on my shoulder startled me awake.

Silvia stood there, her eyes webbed with red, staring straight at me.

Before I could say a word, Silvia spoke.

"Come with me."

I followed her out of the hospital without question.

We went home.

Once inside, she disappeared into her room. I heard drawers opening, things being moved. When she emerged, she carried a worn wooden box in both hands.

She held it out to me. "Everything we own is in here. Some gold jewelry, the car, this apartment, and a plot of vacant land on the outskirts."

"Mom, what are you doing?"

My brow furrowed.

"None of it's worth much." Her voice was flat, matter-of-fact. "Sell it all. Pay back what we owe the relatives. Cover whatever's left of the surgery fees. If there's anything remaining, it's yours to do with as you please."

She paused, and something flickered across her facetoo quick to name.

"As for my ungrateful daughter... if she ever comes to her senses, cuts ties with that Jacob James, and you want to stay married to her, that's your choice. But if you want a divorce?" She met my eyes. "I'll support that too."

Then she sat down and wrote out a gift agreement, every asset transferred to my name. She called Harold Bennett from next door to witness and notarize it.

When it was done, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Her calm was too complete. Too still. Like the surface of water just before it breaks.

I kept reassuring her. Telling her everything would be fine. That she still had meher son-in-law. That I wasn't going anywhere.

She smiled faintly and rose from her chair. "Edgar, thank you. I'm a bit tired. I think I'll lie down."

I walked her to her bedroom door.

After everything she'd been through, rest made sense. Of course it did.

"Mom," I said as she stepped inside. "Don't overthink things."

"Mm. I know."

The door clicked shut.

I stood in the hallway, and the unease I'd been pushing down crawled up my spine. Something was wrong. Something was wrong

THUD.

The sound came from outside. Heavy. Final. Like something had struck the ground with tremendous force.

Then the screaming started.

"Oh my Godsomeone jumped!"
