Freezing My Bank Accounts During Their Luxury Vacation
I'd been working overtime for a month straight.
On the first day of the Fourth of July weekend, my wife showed me the flight tickets she'd booked for the whole family to Maui. Everyone was goingDexcept me.
Caleb, just drop us at security and go home to get some sleep, my wife, Seraphina, said.
She was in full makeup, looking radiant. She patted my shoulder with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
I stared at the stack of first-class tickets in her hand. My throat felt tight.
"You're not taking me?"
"You've been working so hard lately, Caleb. Dragging you to Hawaii would just be more work for you. You're exhausted."
She looked at me with a face full of fake pity.
"I talked it over with my parents. We decided it's better if you stay home and get some peace and quiet."
"Besides, you work so hard for your money. Isn't it better to save on one ticket?"
Her parents and her younger brother, Xavier, were already rushing toward the VIP lounge. They didn't even look back at me.
I stood alone in the middle of the crowded terminal.
To pay for Xavier's graduate school abroad, I'd been sleeping less than five hours a day for months.
Seraphina was throwing my hard-earned money away on a luxury vacation, yet she had the nerve to call it "rest."
"You're right," I said, a cold laugh escaping my lips as I turned to leave.
"I really do need a rest. In fact, I'm done making money for any of you."
Seraphina grabbed my arm.
"Caleb, what's with the attitude?"
"The whole family is going on vacation, and we're letting you stay home to relax."
"Instead of being grateful, you're being snide?"
She raised her voice, drawing stares from the travelers around us.
"Grateful?"
I shook her hand off.
"I nearly killed myself finishing that project to earn a forty-thousand-dollar bonus."
"You immediately spent thirty-five thousand on first-class seats and a beachfront villa."
"And you left out the person who actually paid for it."
"You call that being thoughtful?"
My mother-in-law, Brenda, stopped in her tracks and marched back to us.
"Caleb, how dare you speak to Seraphina like that?"
"Do you have any idea how hard she works around the house?"
"What's wrong with her wanting to clear her head?"
"You sit in an air-conditioned office all day. You have no idea what real work is!"
I stared Brenda down.
"Housework?"
"For the last three years, we've had a robot vacuum that I'm the only one who cleans."
"We have the most expensive dishwasher money can buy. She hasn't touched a sponge in years."
My brother-in-law, Xavier, walked over while scrolling on his phone.
"Caleb, quit being a cheapskate."
"My sister left you a hundred dollars for food."
"That's enough for pizza and burgers for a week."
"Keep acting up and you won't even get that."
I noticed a brand-new Rolex Submariner on Xavier's wrist.
That was the watch I had in my shopping cart for my own thirtieth birthday.
I'd put it there two days ago.
Yesterday, fifteen thousand dollars had been drained from my account.
Seraphina told me she was "investing" the money.
Apparently, she invested it right onto Xavier's wrist.
I pointed at the watch.
"Who bought you that?"
Xavier flinched and hid his hand behind his back.
Seraphina stepped in front of him.
"I bought it. So what?"
"Xavier is going to Europe for his Master's."
"He needs a nice watch so the other students don't look down on him."
"You're a married man, Caleb. Why do you need a fancy watch?"
"Don't you understand prioritizing important expenses?"
I nodded slowly.
"I understand perfectly."
"Everything your family wants is a priority. Anything I want is a waste."
Brenda snorted with contempt.
"Don't act like you're a big shot just because you make a little money."
"Our Seraphina has a Master's degree."
"Back in the day, rich guys were lined up around the block to date her."
"Marrying you was her doing you a favor!"
"Now go home. And make sure the mortgage is paid on time."
"Don't make us late for our flight."
My father-in-law, Arthur, joined in.
"Caleb, be a man. Be generous."
"Seraphina is your wife. What's hers is hers, and what's yours is hers."
"Xavier is your brother. Helping him is your duty."
"Why are you being so petty with family?"
"Now, go home and clean the house."
"I want to see it spotless when we get back."
I looked at the four of them.
After five years, I finally saw these bloodsuckers for what they really were.
"Fine."
"Go. Have a blast."
I turned and walked toward the airport exit.
Seraphina yelled after me.
"Caleb! Don't forget to feed my mom's cat tonight!"
"If anything happens to that cat, you're dead!"
I didn't look back. I walked straight out of the airport.
I got into an Uber and pulled out my phone.
I opened my banking app.
That account was linked to Seraphina's Apple Pay and Venmo.
Every dime she spent on tickets and hotels came out of here.
I clicked "Report Lost Card" and froze every single account.
Then I opened my credit card app.
Xavier and Brenda both had authorized user cards on my account.
For three years, they'd been swiping my credit for luxury goods.
I deactivated their cards and closed the accounts immediately.
A massive weight lifted off my chest.
Five years of suppressed rage finally began to dissipate.
My phone vibrated.
The family group chat was blowing up.
Brenda had posted a video.
It showed the airport's first-class lounge.
Tables were overflowing with gourmet pastries and champagne.
Xavier was flashing his Rolex at the camera.
Arthur was holding a glass of scotch, grinning ear to ear.
Seraphina was lounging in a massage chair with her eyes closed.
Brenda sent a long voice note.
"Look at this, everyone."
"My daughter Seraphina is so devoted to her family."
"The first thing she did for the holiday was take us all to Hawaii."
"The seats in first class are so huge."
"They have people waiting on us hand and foot."
The extended family in the chat went wild.
Aunt Martha sent a thumbs-up.
"Brenda, you're so lucky."
"A successful daughter and an obedient son-in-law."
Uncle Bill chimed in.
"Seraphina was always the smart one. Look at her now."
"Xavier, that watch looks expensive. Is it a Rolex?"
"Must have cost at least fifteen grand."
Xavier replied in the chat.
"My sister got it for me."
"A graduation gift. She wanted me to look the part in Europe."
"Caleb said he loved it, too."
I looked at the lies on the screen and laughed.
When did I say I loved it?
Aunt Martha noticed something.
"Where's Caleb? I don't see him in the video."
Brenda replied with another voice note.
"Oh, Caleb? He doesn't know how to enjoy life. He insisted on staying home."
"He said Hawaii is too hot. He's such a homebody."
"The poor boy just hasn't seen the world. He was too intimidated by first class."
I took a screenshot of the fifteen-thousand-dollar charge for the watch.
I posted it to the chat.
"I paid for the watch."
Then I posted the screenshot of the thirty-five-thousand-dollar travel expenses.
"I paid for the flights and the villa, too."
The group chat went dead silent for a full minute.
Aunt Martha tried to break the awkwardness.
"Caleb, why are you keeping score with family?"
"Your money is Seraphina's money. It's all the same."
Uncle Bill followed up.
"Exactly."
"You're the man of the house. Providing is what you do."
"You should be grateful a girl like Seraphina stayed with you."
Xavier sent a text.
"Caleb, are you seriously crying about money right now?"
"It's only fifty grand. Is it worth throwing a tantrum in the group chat?"
"You're embarrassing my sister."
Finally, Seraphina spoke up.
"Caleb, have you lost your mind?"
"It's a holiday. Why are you acting like a psycho?"
"I try to give you some dignity, and this is how you repay me?"
"Delete those screenshots right now!"
I exited WhatsApp.
I opened my contacts and called a lawyer I knew.
"Hey, Marcus. I need a divorce settlement drafted."
"As fast as possible."
"I want every cent accounted for."
"And I want her out with nothing."
I hung up as the Uber pulled up to my building.
I walked inside and saw the mess they'd left behind.
The closet was ransacked from Seraphina's packing.
Xavier's leftover takeout was rotting on the coffee table.
Brenda's cat had defecated on the rug.
I was done.
I grabbed my suitcase and started packing my things.
I only took my laptop and my documents.
I left everything else behind.
I'd just finished packing when my phone rang.
It was my father-in-law, Arthur.
I answered.
Arthur's voice was booming with unearned authority.
"Caleb, what the hell is wrong with you?"
"Posting those bank statements in the family chat?"
"Do you have any idea how much you've hurt Seraphina?"
I kept my voice calm.
"Why is she hurt?"
"Because I told the truth about who's paying for her lifestyle?"
Arthur was fuming.
"That money means nothing!"
"Seraphina gave you five years of her life. She gave you her youth!"
"So she spent a few hundred thousand. Big deal!"
"You go into that chat right now and apologize."
"Tell everyone those screenshots were fake and that you're just stressed."
I actually laughed.
"Why would I do that?"
"Because I'm her father, that's why!"
"Without my blessing, you never would have touched her!"
"You're nothing but a hired hand for this family!"
"We let you pay for things because we're giving you the honor of being part of us!"
"Don't you dare be ungrateful!"
I didn't even get angry. Reasoning with a man like him was a waste of breath.
"A hired hand?"
"Fine."
"This hired hand is quitting."
"Figure out how to pay for your own vacation."
I hung up.
I blocked Arthur immediately.
Before I could put the phone down, Seraphina called.
I picked up.
"Caleb! You need to transfer a hundred thousand dollars right now!"
She sounded like she was having a breakdown.
"We're at the luxury boutiques in Maui. Xavier found a bag for eighty thousand."
"My mom wants some gold necklaces."
"Why isn't my card working?"
I leaned back on the sofa.
"Because I reported it stolen."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end.
"Are you insane?"
"What right do you have to cut me off?"
I corrected her.
"It's my card."
"And the money in the account is money I earned."
"I've decided I don't want to spend it on you anymore."
Seraphina screamed.
"Caleb, you're not a man!"
"Just because we didn't take you on one trip, you're cutting us off?"
"I'm telling you, if you don't send that money, I'm divorcing you the second I get back!"
That was exactly what I wanted to hear.
"Fine."
"See you at the courthouse Monday morning at nine."
Seraphina went silent.
She clearly hadn't expected me to agree so easily.
In her eyes, I was the spineless ATM who would always take her back.
"You're threatening me?"
"You think I won't do it?"
"Men will be lining up to marry me the second I'm single!"
"A cheap loser like you deserves to be alone forever!"
I cut her off.
"I hope your next ATM has a better temper than me."
I hung up.
I blocked her, too.
The world was finally quiet.
I rolled my suitcase out of the cage I'd lived in for five years.
I checked into a high-end bachelor apartment downtown.
That night, Marcus sent over the draft for the divorce.
I reviewed it carefully.
The house was mine before the marriage. It was separate property.
The bulk of the savings was in my name.
Seraphina hadn't saved a dime in five years. In fact, she had massive credit card debt.
I made sure every bit of that debt stayed with her.
I printed the papers and signed them.
For the next two days, I cut off all contact with the Miller family.
I slept until I woke up naturally. I didn't have to cook for anyone.
I didn't have to run errands for Xavier.
I didn't have to listen to Brenda's insults.
I didn't have to see Seraphina's entitled face.
On the third afternoon, Marcus called me.
"Caleb, we have a problem."
"Your brother-in-law just got into some serious trouble."
I sat up straight.
"What happened?"
"They're in Maui. They rented a Ferrari to go joyriding."
"Xavier totaled it."
"He's okay, but the damage is over three hundred thousand dollars."
"The rental company is holding them until someone pays."
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Marcus sounded grim.
"When Xavier rented the car, Seraphina signed as the guarantor."
"The company found out you two are married."
"They're preparing to sue both of you for the full amount."
I let out a cold laugh.
"Joint liability?"
"He was driving. He signed the rental agreement."
"I wasn't there, and I didn't authorize it."
"Why should I pay?"
Marcus sighed.
"Seraphina signed the papers as his guarantor."
"Under the law during a marriage, debts incurred can sometimes be seen as marital debt."
I clenched my fist.
Seraphina, you really are something else.
To make her brother look like a big shot, she'd sign anything.
"Marcus, start gathering evidence immediately."
"Prove that this money was not for the benefit of our household."
"Prove it was personal consumption during a trip I was excluded from."
"I want to be completely severed from them!"
Marcus agreed to start the process.
I opened my laptop and logged into my iCloud.
For convenience, Seraphina's phone had always been synced to my cloud.
I started digging through her recent photos and messages for evidence.
I clicked on a folder labeled "Notes." What I found turned my blood to ice.
It was full of screenshots of her chats with a man.
The man was Dominic VanceDher college sweetheart.
"Babe, is the Maui villa booked?"
"Everything's ready. First class for everyone."
"Did that loser Caleb suspect anything?"
"He's working overtime every day. He doesn't have a clue."
"I'm leaving him behind so we can have a few days to ourselves."
Below that was another screenshot.
Seraphina had used my account to Venmo Dominic five thousand dollars.
The memo read: "For my favorite guy's pocket money."
I stared at the screen, my eyes burning.
Five years. I'd supported this family like a fool.
She wasn't just wasting my money on her parents; she was using it to fund her affair.
Even this "family vacation" was just a cover for her to hook up with her ex!
Rage boiled over, incinerating my last shred of sympathy.
I bundled every screenshot and sent them to Marcus.
"Marcus, add this to the filing."
"Adultery and dissipation of marital assets."
Marcus saw the files and gasped.
"Caleb, they're finished."
Right then, Seraphina called from an unknown number.
I answered.
"Caleb! You have to save Xavier!"
"They're going to throw him in jail!"
"Transfer three hundred thousand dollars right now!"
I leaned into the phone, speaking slowly and clearly.
"Seraphina, was that five thousand dollars enough for Dominic?"
The line went deathly silent.
"What what are you talking about?"
Seraphina's voice began to tremble.
"I'm talking about you using my money to pay your boyfriend."
"I'm talking about how you took your family to Maui just to see him."
"I've already handed all the evidence to my lawyer."
"Including the crash with the Ferrari."
"You signed as the guarantor, Seraphina."
"You and your family can figure out how to pay for it."
"If you can't, let Xavier rot in jail."
Brenda's voice shrieked in the background.
"Caleb! You heartless beast!"
"Xavier is your wife's only brother!"
"You're going to watch him suffer? You'll burn for this!"
I hung up and turned off my phone.
The next day, I went to work as usual.
After work, I hit the gym for an hour.
I felt lighter than I had in years.
When I got back to my apartment building, I saw them.
The Miller family was huddled by the entrance, looking pathetic.
Three days ago at the airport, they were on top of the world in designer clothes.
Now, they looked like garbage.
Arthur's shirt was stained and wrinkled.
Brenda's hair was a bird's nest.
Xavier looked pale and terrified, hiding behind his mother.
Seraphina saw me and burst into tears.
She tried to grab my arm, but I stepped aside.
"Caleb, I messed up!"
"I'm so sorry! I really am!"
"Please save Xavier!"
"The rental company says they'll charge him with fraud if we don't pay!"
"He's supposed to go to Europe. He can't have a criminal record!"
I looked at her crocodile tears.
"I don't give a damn about his record."
Brenda fell to her knees on the sidewalk.
"Caleb, I'm begging you!"
"It's all our fault. We were wrong."
"But you can't let Xavier be ruined!"
"Don't you still have a few hundred thousand in your savings?"
"Just pay it off for now."
"Xavier will pay you back double once he makes it big!"
I looked down at Brenda.
"Mom, didn't you say I was just the hired hand?"
"Since when does the hired hand pay the master's debts?"
Arthur pointed a finger at me, shaking with rage.
"Caleb! Don't push us!"
"Seraphina apologized. What more do you want?"
"Fine, we won't spend your money anymore."
"Just get us through this one crisis!"
I pulled a folder from my bag and slapped it against Seraphina's chest.
"These are the divorce papers."
"Sign them."
Seraphina opened the folder and shrieked.
"Nothing?"
"You're giving me nothing?"
"How dare you!"
"I spent five years with you! I deserve half!"
"You think you can just dump me? No way!"
I nodded calmly.
"Don't sign then."
"Tomorrow morning, I file for divorce in court."
"I'll include the evidence of your affair with Dominic and the bank transfers."
"Oh, and that three-hundred-thousand-dollar Ferrari?"
"I'll make sure the court sees it as your personal debt."
"Because you were with Dominic when the car crashed, weren't you?"
Seraphina collapsed onto the ground.
She looked at me with pure terror.
"How how did you know Dominic was driving?"
