Wife Gave My House to Brother
The ink on the redevelopment agreement was barely dry when my wife snatched the deed to my new luxury condo. She stuffed it straight into her younger brother's backpack without a second thought.
This three-bedroom unit is going to be Leo's wedding house. We're moving into that run-down studio in the slums, she declared.
I stared at her in disbelief, my hands trembling as I gripped the handles of my mother's wheelchair. My mother sat there, paralyzed from the neck down, her eyes wide with fear.
That house wasn't some joint marital asset. It was my personal property from before our marriage, a gift from my late father.
The clerk behind the desk frowned and cleared her throat. "Ma'am, I should remind you that this property belongs to your husband. It's a pre-marital asset exchange."
My wife, Elena, didn't even flinch. She shot me a cold, warning glare.
"We're family, aren't we? What's mine is yours, and what's yours is mine. Leo's future father-in-law said if he doesn't have a big house, the wedding is off."
She glanced dismissively at my mother. "Your mom is stuck in bed all day anyway. Does it really matter where she spends her time breathing?"
Leo stood there with his fiance, Crystal, clutching the deed as if it were his birthright. They didn't even have the decency to look guilty.
I looked down at my mother, and a hot tear splashed onto the floor. Elena had forgotten the most important thing. My mother was only in that wheelchair because of her.
A year ago, Elena's drunk driving caused the crash that destroyed my mother's life. Now, she wanted to take our last shred of security to fix her brother's problems.
Fine. If she wanted to destroy our lives for her brother, then our marriage was officially dead.
Leo Miller patted his bag provocatively.
"Caleb, what's with the face? Just sign the damn papers."
"Crystal's family is coming to see the house tomorrow. If you ruin my marriage, you'll pay for it," he sneered.
I took a sharp step back, pulling my mother's wheelchair with me.
"I'm not signing a single thing."
Elena's face instantly darkened. She stormed over and grabbed my wrist, her nails digging deep into my skin.
"Caleb Sterling, what is wrong with you?" she hissed.
"Everyone in this hall is watching. Do you want to embarrass me and the Miller family?"
The young clerk stood up, looking concerned. "Ma'am, please let go of him! This is a forced transfer of private property!"
Elena whirled around and screamed at the girl. "Shut up! This is a family matter! Just do your job and keep your mouth shut!"
She turned back to me, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper.
"Caleb, I'm warning you. You will sign these papers today, one way or another."
"If Leo's wedding falls through, I'm cutting off your mother's medical bills. No more dialysis, no more physical therapy. Not a cent."
"You can take that useless woman and beg for scraps on the street for all I care!"
On the wheelchair, my mother's mouth twitched violently. Saliva dripped down her chin as she tried to speak, but only muffled groans came out.
Her one hand that could still move clutched my shirt tightly. Tears rolled down her wrinkled face.
My heart felt like it was being shredded. I remembered everything from the past year.
Three months ago, Elena stole twenty thousand dollars from my mother's surgery fund. She used it to buy Leo a brand-new car.
Six months ago, she sold my mother's only heirloom watch. She bought Leo a pair of limited-edition sneakers for his birthday.
I pointed at my mother's withered legs, my voice shaking with rage.
"Elena, look at her. Look at what you did."
"She's in this chair because you insisted on driving while wasted! You destroyed her life!"
"Now you want to steal the only roof she has left?"
Elena's eyes flickered for a split second, but her guilt was quickly replaced by annoyance.
"The crash was an accident! The police report is filed, and I apologized. What else do you want? For me to kneel and beg?"
"Besides, I'm the one working to support this family. You should be grateful!"
"Don't be so selfish. It's just a house."
Leo stepped forward, playing the victim. "Elena, don't be hard on Caleb. It's just my bad luck."
"Crystal's mom hates that I'm from the wrong side of town. Without this house to prove my worth, she'll make Crystal leave me."
"If Caleb is that stingy, I'll just stay single forever. I'll go live in a shelter," he whined.
Crystal crossed her arms and scoffed. "I'm an only child. My mom only agreed to this because Elena promised a luxury condo."
"If the house is gone, the wedding is off. I'm going home to find a real man."
Elena panicked. She lunged forward to grab Crystal's arm, her face twisting into a desperate smile.
"Crystal, honey, don't go! Caleb is just being difficult. I run this house!"
"The house belongs to Leo. I'll make sure he signs the papers today!"
Elena turned back to me, her eyes wild. "Caleb, for the last time, sign it!"
I looked at her distorted face and felt nothing but cold disgust. I shoved her back, the wheels of the chair catching her designer heels.
She yelped in pain as she lost her grip.
"If your family is so prestigious, go buy your own house."
"You won't get a single brick from my mother's property," I said, turning the wheelchair around.
I walked out of the hall without looking back.
The studio in the slums smelled like mold and ancient grease. The wallpaper was peeling in long, yellowed strips, revealing the damp concrete beneath.
I lifted my mother from her chair and placed her gently on the rickety bed.
She opened her mouth, making raspy, desperate noises. She shook her head, pointing at the door and then at me.
She wanted me to leave. She wanted me to get a divorce.
I took a damp towel and wiped the corners of her mouth.
Mom, don't worry. Im not letting them win this time.
My phone buzzed. It was a notification from Leos Instagram.
He had posted a photo of himself and Crystal standing in my new condo, holding a set of keys.
The caption read: So lucky to have the best sister in the world! Thanks for the new wedding house. Being the baby brother has its perks!
Crystal had commented: Love you, babe! Big sis is the goat!
Elena had replied with three heart emojis.
I stared at the screen, my stomach churning with nausea. Suddenly, a heavy pounding erupted at the door.
Caleb! Open the door right now! Get out here!
Elenas voice screamed through the thin wood, smelling of booze and fury.
My mother flinched, a low whimper escaping her throat. I patted her hand to calm her and stood behind the locked door.
What do you want, Elena?
She kicked the door hard. You have the nerve to ask that? You humiliated me today!
Crystals mother called me and screamed for thirty minutes! She thinks were liars!
Get your ID and come to the housing office right now. Were finishing the transfer!
I leaned against the door, my voice as cold as ice.
Elena, did you forget the vow you made when we got married?
You knelt in front of my mother and promised to love her like your own.
Then you paralyzed her. You stole her insurance payout to pay off Leos gambling debts. And now you want her house?
Elena let out a harsh, jagged laugh.
Stop bringing up the past! Who cares about the insurance money?
Your mom is a vegetable! She eats, sleeps, and poops in a bed. Giving her money is a waste!
Leo has a future. He needs the investment. Once he marries into a rich family, hell throw you some scraps.
Im thinking about our future. Youre just too pathetic to see it!
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
So my mothers life is worth nothing to you? Is that it?
Elena, Im asking one last time. Do you even care about being my wife?
There was a brief silence, followed by her impatient snarl.
Caleb, don't push it. I only have one brother, but I can always find another husband.
Who else would want a guy with a paralyzed burden like yours?
Ill give you one night to think. 9:00 AM tomorrow, at the office. If you aren't there, don't expect another dime for your mothers care.
I heard her footsteps fade away down the hallway.
I sank to the floor, my back against the cold door. There were no more tears left to cry.
I stood up and walked to the small, wobbly table. I pulled out a stack of paper and a pen.
I wrote three words at the top of the page: Divorce Settlement Agreement.
Then, I dialed a number I hadn't called in years. It was Dominic Shaw, a college friend and now a top-tier litigator.
Dominic, Im filing for divorce. I want everything back. I want to ruin her.
The next morning, a long voice note from Leo woke me up.
I pressed play, and his smug voice filled the room.
Caleb, Crystal and I are measuring the rooms. She wants a massive vanity in the master and a walk-in closet.
Oh, and your moms wheelchair chipped the molding. Elena says the repair cost is coming out of your grocery budget next month.
Just come sign the papers. If Elena gets any angrier, she might forget to buy your moms meds.
In the background, I could hear Elenas sycophantic laughter and Crystal barking orders at some workers.
I stared at the water stain on the ceiling. I remembered a few weeks ago.
I had worked three double shifts in a row and was starving.
Elena called me, sounding frantic. She said she needed five hundred dollars for an urgent work client dinner.
The next day, I saw Leo wearing a new five-hundred-dollar watch on his social media.
The caption was: Sis knows exactly what I like! Best gift ever!
When I confronted her, she just shrugged. Leo needs to look professional for interviews. Youre a married man, Caleb. You don't need fancy things.
I tossed my phone aside. I packed my folder with every bank statement, transfer record, and deed I had.
By noon, I had dropped my mother off at the clinic for her check-up and met Dominic at his firm.
Dominics brow furrowed as he flipped through the documents.
Caleb, she hasn't just been spending your money. Shes diverted over sixty thousand dollars of marital funds to her brother.
This is textbook asset dissipation. We can freeze her accounts immediately.
I looked at him, my expression blank.
I don't just want the money back. I want her to pay back every cent with interest. I want her gone with nothing.
That evening, Elena walked into the studio. She looked triumphant.
She tossed a cheap, five-dollar takeout box onto the table. The grease leaked out onto the wood.
Eat up. Im in a good mood today, so Ill overlook your behavior from yesterday.
She sat down, admiring her new manicure. Great news. I just landed a three-million-dollar contract at work.
My boss said Im getting promoted to Department Manager tomorrow. My salary is doubling!
She lit a cigarette, blowing a cloud of smoke toward my mothers bed.
Once the promotion is official, well sell this dump. Leo found some Italian furniture for twenty thousand, and I need the cash for the down payment.
I found a basement apartment near my office for you and your mom. Its only eight hundred a month.
Ill stay in the company dorms and visit you guys on weekends. Sounds fair, right?
She flicked her ash onto the floor, looking at me like she was a saint.
I looked at the cold, greasy food and then at her smug face. I felt a surge of pure, unfiltered loathing.
I grabbed the takeout box and smashed it right against her expensive blouse.
The orange grease splattered across her face and chest.
Elena jumped up, screaming like a banshee. Caleb! Are you freaking insane?
I reached into my bag and slammed the divorce papers onto the table.
Sign it. Since you love your brother so much, go live with him.
Were done.
Elena stared at the papers, her jaw dropping in shock. Then, she burst into a loud, mocking laugh.
Divorce? Caleb, have you lost your mind?
She poked my chest hard with her finger. Look at yourself. Youre a mess. Your clothes are stained, and your hair looks like a birds nest.
You have a paralyzed mother to feed! Without me, who pays your rent? Who buys her diapers?
Don't think you can scare me into giving back the house. Its not happening!
I brushed her hand away and looked her in the eye.
Scare you? Elena, you really think highly of yourself.
For the last two years, Ive paid every medical bill with my own overtime pay. You haven't contributed a dime.
All youve done is drain our accounts to fund Leos lifestyle.
When my mom was shaking with a fever of 104, you were out buying Leo shoes. When the power was cut, I was hauling rice up six flights of stairs while you were servicing Leos car.
Id rather beg on the streets with my mother than spend one more second with you.
The smile vanished from Elenas face. She finally realized I wasn't bluffing.
Her tone shifted instantly, becoming soft and manipulative. She reached for my hand.
Caleb, honey, don't be impulsive. Weve been together for seven years. You can't just throw that away.
Maybe I was a little biased, but Im the eldest sister. I have to look out for Leo.
Im not leaving you. Once Leo is married, Ill focus entirely on us. I promise.
I pulled my hand back, feeling sick. Fine. You want to stay married? Heres the deal.
Give me back the deed to the condo right now. And get back the sixty thousand dollars you gave Leo. Put it in my account tonight.
Do that, and Ill tear up these papers.
Elenas face turned pale, then grey. She stammered, stepping back.
The... the money is spent. How can I get it back? The car and the shoes are used!
And Leo already started the renovations! Crystals family is coming tomorrow! If I take the house back now, Ill be humiliated!
Caleb, youre asking for the impossible! How can you be so cruel?
Right then, her phone rang. She answered it like it was a lifeline.
Leos voice came through, loud and hysterical.
Elena! Get over here! A pipe burst in the new condo!
The hardwood floors are ruined! The neighbors downstairs are calling the cops! The building manager says the damage is over fifteen thousand dollars!
Crystal is screaming at me! Bring some cash and get down here now!
Elenas expression shifted to pure panic. She grabbed her jacket and started running for the door.
Leo, don't panic! Im coming! Ill find the money!
She paused at the door and shot me a look of pure hatred.
Caleb, stop this nonsense. I don't have time for your games.
Sign the papers if you want, but youll regret it. Don't push me!
The door slammed shut. She didn't even look at my mother, who was shivering in the corner of the bed.
I walked over and held my mother until her shaking stopped. Then, I looked out the window as Elena ran down the alley.
I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I had kept hidden for a long time.
Hello, Mr. Harrison?
Is your offer to buy my green energy patent for five million dollars still on the table?
A deep, professional voice answered, Of course, Caleb. The whole industry has been waiting for you to say yes.
I looked out at the dark city skyline.
Ill sell it. But I have one condition. I need your best medical team to pick up my mother tonight.
And I need your legal team. I want to destroy someone.
