Death By A Birthday Wish
My mother-in-law's brain was bleeding out, and my husband, Conrad, the city's top neurosurgeon, was the only one who could perform the surgery to save her.
In that desperate race against time, I called him over and over, my heart hammering against my ribs. But when the line finally connected, it wasn't his voice I heard. It was his obsession, Willow Vance.
"Oh, is that you, Natalie? Conrad is here celebrating my birthday. He accidentally spilled a drink and ruined his shirt, so he's in the shower right now. I'll tell him to call you back later, okay?"
I felt a surge of pure, white-hot rage. "Conrad's mother is dying! She's had a massive stroke. Tell him to get to the hospital this second!"
Suddenly, Conrad's voice cut through the line, a jagged roar of annoyance. "Natalie, for God's sake, enough! Why is it that every time I try to do something for Willow, you come up with some pathetic excuse to drag me away?"
The call went dead before I could speak. He didn't just hang up; he shut me out completely.
My mother-in-law died that night because the surgery happened too late.
But none of us realized that the person truly responsible for her death was the very woman Conrad cherished more than his own family.
"Natalie, your mother-in-law is in critical condition. Her aneurysm ruptured. Given her age and the severity of the hemorrhage, her pupils are already starting to dilate."
"The blood vessels are receding. Right now, there isn't a surgeon on staff who can handle a case this delicate."
"I know your husband, Dr. Conrad Sinclair, has been managing her care. He's the best neurosurgeon in the state. If he can get here right now, there might be one last shred of hope."
The doctor's heavy sigh felt like a lead weight crushing my chest. I stumbled back, my head spinning with a nauseating mix of fear and disbelief.
There was no time to hesitate. This nightmare had come out of nowhere.
Andy, Conrad's younger brother, was still ten minutes away. I was the only one here. I was the only one who could save her.
My fingers shook so violently I could barely unlock my phone. I dialed the number I knew by heart.
After what felt like an eternity of ringing, a woman's voice answered.
"Hello? Are you looking for Conrad?"
The sound of her voice was like a match to gasoline. I didn't hold back. "Who the hell is this? Why do you have my husband's phone?"
The woman on the other end seemed taken aback by my tone. After a calculated pause, she spoke in a soft, fragile voice. "Oh, you must be his wife. I'm Willow, an old friend of his."
"He's celebrating my birthday with me, and we were having such a good time that things got a little messy. He's in the shower cleaning up. If it's not an emergency, I can have him call you back."
Her voice was calm and steady, projecting a level of intimacy that made me feel like the intruder in my own marriage.
I knew exactly who she was. Willow VanceDthe girl he grew up with, the one who got away.
Every time she snapped her fingers, Conrad would drop everything to run to her. It was the cancer that had been eating away at our marriage for years.
I forced myself to breathe, trying to sound controlled. "Willow, put Conrad on the phone. Now. It's a matter of life and death."
Before she could respond, I heard the phone being snatched away. Conrad's voice was full of venom as he jumped to her defense.
"Natalie, are you seriously doing this again? Every time I'm with Willow, you have a mental breakdown. What could possibly be so important?"
I ignored the insult. I didn't have the luxury of pride. "Conrad, your mom had a brain hemorrhage. She's on the table. You need to get here immediately."
Conrad's laugh was cold and bitter.
"You've really lost it, haven't you? Just because I'm spending a few hours for Willow's birthday, you're willing to curse my mother just to scare me? You're sick, Natalie."
I tried to explain, to read him the medical chart, but a loud crash echoed from his end of the line.
Then came the sound of Willow's muffled, theatrical sobbing.
Conrad's tone flipped instantly. The coldness he showed me turned into frantic concern for her. "Willow! Are you okay? Where are you hurt?"
He didn't have another second for me. He snarled into the phone. "Natalie, I saw Mom this morning. She was perfectly fine, sitting in her garden. You're lying just to force me home."
"I'm going to deal with you when I get back. Stay the hell away from my phone!"
The line went dead. I tried calling back, but it went straight to voicemail. He had turned it off.
I collapsed onto the hospital floor, the cold tile pressing against my skin as despair flooded my lungs.
He was the only one who could save her. And he chose the woman who was playing a part over the mother who gave him everything.
Andy finally burst through the hospital doors, drenched in sweat and trembling. His eyes were wide with a raw, primal fear.
When the surgical team explained the situation, the tall, athletic man crumbled like a child, sliding into a waiting room chair.
He dug his fingernails into his palms, his tears falling silently onto the floor.
Then, he snapped. He started dialing Conrad's number like a madman, but the result was the same. No answer.
"Natalie, what do we do?" he choked out, his voice breaking. "We have to find him. She's our mother. She's all we have!"
I looked at my brother-in-law's shattered face and then at the closed doors of the ICU. I made a choice.
"Andy, stay here," I said, my voice surprisingly steady. "I need you to be here if anything changes. I'm going to find Conrad and drag him back here myself."
I started calling every one of Conrad's lowlife friends. After threatening to call the cops on one of them for an old DUI, I finally got Willow's address.
I drove like a woman possessed, weaving through Seattle traffic and ignoring every red light. My mind was a single, repeating mantra: "Bring him back. Bring him back."
When I reached the high-end condo complex, I spotted Conrad's car in the garage immediately. I took the elevator up, my heart hammering against my ribs.
I pounded on Willow's door until it swung open. Conrad stood there, draped in nothing but a white towel.
The sight of him, fresh from the shower in another woman's home while his mother was dying, made my blood boil. I wanted to burn everything down.
But I couldn't. I didn't have time for a scene.
Willow stepped into view, looking small and vulnerable. She didn't skip a beat. "Natalie, please don't get the wrong idea. Conrad just spilled something on his clothes. He's just cleaning up. There's nothing going on."
I walked right past her, grabbed Conrad's clothes from the chair, and shoved them at his chest. "Get dressed. We're going to the hospital. Your mother is dying."
Conrad didn't move. He sat down on the sofa with a look of smug exhaustion. "You've got a lot of nerve, Natalie. Tracking me down here?"
"Remember last time? When Willow was sick and you told me Mom's blood pressure was skyrocketing just to get me home? I'm not a fool. I'm not falling for it twice."
I lost it. I screamed at him, hoping to shake some sense into his thick skull.
"Conrad! This isn't a game! She is in critical condition! Are you really going to sit there and watch your own mother die?"
Conrad saw the look in my eyes, and for a split second, doubt flickered across his face.
But Willow spoke up, her voice dripping with fake concern. "Natalie, even if you're jealous, you shouldn't use her life as a bargaining chip. What if you jinx it?"
"And besides, if it were that bad, wouldn't Andy have called? Surely a son would call his brother if their mother were actually dying."
"Unless, of course, the daughter-in-law cares more than the biological son. That sounds a bit far-fetched, don't you think?"
I tightened my fists, fighting the urge to rip the hair off her head.
I needed Conrad to believe me. That was all that mattered.
"If you don't believe me, call Andy," I pleaded. "Call him right now. See if I'm lying."
Conrad hesitated, then reached for his phone and turned it on. He dialed Andy's number.
The phone rang and rang. No one picked up. It went to voicemail.
Conrad's expression shifted from doubt to cold, hard fury. He looked at me like I was something he'd found on the bottom of his shoe.
Suddenly, a sharp cry from Willow broke the tension.
Conrad spun around instantly. Willow was clutching her wrist, blood seeping through her fingers. A shattered glass lay at her feet.
He rushed to her side, pulling out a first-aid kit with more tenderness than he had ever shown me. He began bandaging her with focused, expert precision.
I tried to grab his phone from the sofa to call Andy again, but he snatched it away.
He hurled the phone against the wall with all his might. It shattered into a hundred pieces.
"Enough!" he roared. "I'm done with your acting, Natalie! I wanted to give her one nice birthday, and you're turning it into a funeral. You hate her that much?"
"If you can't handle my life, then get a divorce! Get out!"
I reached for his arm, desperate to explain, but he twisted my wrist and shoved me toward the door.
He threw me out into the hallway and slammed the door in my face. I stood there alone, the cold silence of the corridor seeping into my bones.
I slumped against the wall, defeated. My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Andy.
"Andy! Why didn't you answer when Conrad called?" I cried out.
Andy's voice was a ragged, sobbing mess. "Natalie the doctors they made me sign a DNR notice. They said her heart stopped. They're starting emergency surgery now, but they need a specialist. Where is he? Where is my brother?"
The world tilted on its axis. I let out a broken wail, tears blurring my vision.
I turned back to the door and began pounding on it with my fists, my knees, my entire body.
"Conrad! Open the door! Open it now! She's flatlining! If you don't come out right now, I swear to God, you will regret this for the rest of your life!"
Silence. Nothing but the muffled sound of Conrad whispering sweet nothings to Willow.
I realized then that Conrad was a lost cause. I didn't waste another second. I ran for the elevator.
By the time I made it back to the surgical wing, the atmosphere had changed. It was too quiet.
The lead surgeon looked at me with pity in his eyes. He let out a long, weary breath.
"The damage was too extensive, and we lost too much time. We did everything we could, but we couldn't bring her back."
"You can go in and say your goodbyes now."
The words were like a physical blow to the head. My legs gave out, and I hit the floor hard.
Down the hall, I could hear Andy's agonizing scream as he ran into the room.
It felt like a thousand needles were piercing my heart. I forced myself to stand, my body feeling like it was made of lead.
I walked into that room, every step feeling like a mile.
The lights were dimmed. The shadow cast a gray hue over her pale, still face. She looked so small under the hospital blankets.
Andy was draped over her body, shaking with violent sobs.
"Mom, please! Wake up! Look at me!" he wailed. "I promise I'll be better! I won't ever talk back again! Just please don't leave!"
Suddenly, her finger twitched. It was a miracle of terminal lucidity. Her eyes fluttered open, though they were clouded and unfocused.
"Andy" she whispered, her voice like dry leaves. "I'm going now you have to take care of yourself."
Then, her eyes moved toward me. She was looking behind me, searching for someone who wasn't there.
The disappointment in her eyes broke me. "Natalie where's Conrad? Did Willow take him away again?"
I couldn't tell her the truth. I couldn't let her die with that weight. "Mom, don't worry. He's he's on his way. He'll be here any second. Just hold on for him, okay?"
She didn't believe me. She reached out a shaking hand and touched my hair one last time.
"Natalie, I always loved you like my own daughter. What Conrad did it's wrong. I won't make excuses for him."
"If you can't stay with him, then leave. You're a good woman. You shouldn't have to suffer like this."
I grabbed her hand and squeezed it, trying to pull her back to life. "Mom, please, stay! There's so much we haven't done yet!"
Her hand went limp. Her eyes closed, and the monitor flatlined into a long, haunting drone.
The world collapsed around me. I drowned in a sea of grief so deep I thought I'd never breathe again.
The doctors came in to lead us out. Someone pulled the white sheet over her head, erasing her from the world.
Andy remained on the floor, clutching his chest as if his heart were literally breaking. He was no longer the cheerful kid I knew. He looked hollow.
I stood there like a ghost, the silence of the room ringing in my ears.
I don't know how long passed before I regained enough strength to move.
I stumbled out of the room to find Andy, but I ran straight into Conrad instead.
He was carefully guiding Willow down the hall, holding her as if she were made of thin glass.
He was giving her the tenderness I had begged for during our entire marriage.
The sight of it shattered what was left of my heart. I couldn't even catch my breath.
Conrad looked up and saw me. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a wall of icy defense.
"Natalie? Are you stalking me now?" he spat.
He gestured to Willow's bandaged wrist. "Look at what you did. You went into a jealous fit and caused this. Are you happy?"
I started to shake, a mix of grief and fury bubbling up in my throat. "Stalking you? You think I'm here for you?"
"Natalie, enough! You're still sticking to this lie about Mom? Do you really think I won't divorce you for this?"
I looked at him with a mix of pity and disgust. I wondered what his face would look like when the truth finally hit him.
Willow leaned into him, playing the martyr. "Conrad, don't fight with her. She only acts this way because she loves you. It's my fault for being too close to you."
Seeing her fake tears and her smug, hidden smile made my blood boil. The realization that Mom died because of this woman's birthday party pushed me over the edge.
I swung my hand back, intending to slap the lies right off her face.
But Conrad caught my wrist and shoved me back with enough force to send me hitting the floor.
"You're pathetic, Natalie!" he yelled. "Willow is hurt because of you, and instead of apologizing, you try to hit her? I can't believe I married such a monster!"
I scrambled to my feet, ready to throw myself at him, when a blur of motion came from the side.
A fist connected with Conrad's jaw, slamming him against the wall. Blood sprayed from his lip.
It was Andy. His eyes were bloodshot, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
Willow screamed, a shrill, piercing sound. "Andy! What are you doing? That's your brother!"
Conrad looked at his brother in shock. "Andy? Have you lost your mind too? Are you following her lead now?"
Andy's voice was a guttural roar. "You have the balls to ask me that? Do you have any idea what you've done?"
"Why didn't you answer your phone? Why did you ignore Natalie? Why didn't you come back to save Mom?"
I tried to hold Andy back, fearing he'd do something he'd regret, but he was like a wounded animal.
Conrad wiped the blood from his mouth, still acting as if we were the ones at fault. "Andy, don't tell me you fell for their little play. Mom is fine."
Willow added fuel to the fire. "Exactly. And why are you holding Natalie like that? It's a bit inappropriate for a brother-in-law, isn't it?"
Andy's rage spiked again. He tried to lunge at Conrad, but I held on tight.
"Conrad, use your damn brain!" I screamed. "Why would we lie about this?"
Seeing our desperation, the smugness finally began to drain from Conrad's face. "Fine. What exactly happened to her?"
Just then, the attending surgeon walked over. He saw Conrad and his expression turned somber.
"Dr. Sinclair you're finally here. We tried everywhere to reach you. Your mother she's"
