The Eight Year Cage, The Replacement Wife

The Eight Year Cage, The Replacement Wife

I risked my life to bring his child into this world, thinking it would be the start of a beautiful life with Killian Sterling.

I was wrong. It was actually the beginning of my descent into a bottomless abyss.

For eight long years, he kept me and our son locked away in that house like prisoners.

Everything changed the day his first love, Melody Reed, won a prestigious award for her painting.

Killian stood in front of that painting, staring at the figure in the background and smiling for a long time.

He told everyone that the silhouette was him, claiming Melody had never truly forgotten him.

My son, Leo, looked up at me with wide, hopeful eyes and asked, "Mommy, Daddy looks so happy. Does this mean I can finally go outside and play with the other kids?"

I stroked his hair, my heart aching. "Yes, baby. No one will keep us locked up anymore. You can play outside every single day from now on."

Leo's face lit up with a brilliant smile.

But inside, my soul was weeping.

It turned out that his precious first love was the only key that could unlock the doors of this golden cage.

After I finally managed to coax Leo into a deep sleep, I called the Matriarch of the Sterling family.

"Matriarch, Melody is back," I said, my voice steady. "It's time for you to let us go."

For eight years of marriage, my son and I had been confined to that mansion.

Except for the occasional forced dinners at the family estate, we were never allowed to step a foot past the front gate.

Now, this prison was finally about to crumble.

As soon as I hung up, Leo rushed out of his room and threw his small arms around my waist.

He was trembling with excitement. "Mommy, is it true? Can I really go to school like the other kids? Can I really go to the park?"

A sharp pang of guilt sliced through my heart, and tears began to blur my vision.

Looking back, the person I had failed most wasn't myselfDit was my son.

Since the moment he was born, he had been forced to endure a loneliness that no child should ever know.

I brushed his hair back and nodded, forcing a smile. "Yes, Leo. We're leaving."

"What about Daddy? Is he coming with us to the amusement park?"

I went silent, the words caught in my throat.

I didn't know how to tell him that from this day forward, he wouldn't have a home here anymoreDand he wouldn't have a father.

I pulled him into a tight embrace and whispered, "If you never saw Daddy again, would you be sad?"

Leo tilted his head. "Would you be sad, Mommy?"

I shook my head. I had spent eight years mourning this pathetic excuse for a marriage; I had no tears left for him.

"Then I won't be sad either," Leo said firmly. "I'll grow up fast and protect you, Mommy."

That night, Killian was hosting a massive gala for Melody. Earlier that evening, I had watched him get dressed in a custom suit, looking more handsome than I'd seen him in years.

He had a rare, gentle smile on his face as he walked out the door.

They were childhood sweethearts, the perfect match in every wayDuntil Melody's family went bankrupt. The Matriarch had done everything in her power to stop them from being together.

Killian had even threatened to end his life until the Matriarch finally relented.

But when he proposed, Melody rejected him, choosing to fly to London to chase her dreams of becoming a world-class artist.

Killian had spent a year in a drunken stupor, rotting away in his villa.

Eventually, the Matriarch found meDa girl who looked about sixty percent like Melody.

One night, when Killian was blind drunk, we had a physical encounter that resulted in Leo.

He was forced to marry me, but he never breathed a word about his wife or son to the outside world.

I fell in love with him at first sight, foolishly believing that a child would eventually make him accept me.

I spent eight years realizing that I had only built a cage for myself and my son.

A little later, Killian called. He told me the Matriarch wanted us at the family estate for dinner.

"Can you really get away from the party?" I asked, surprised.

"My business is none of your concern," he snapped coldly before hanging up.

An hour later, I was sitting at the massive dining table at the Sterling estate with Leo.

Killian hadn't arrived yet.

The Matriarch called me into her private study. "Are you certain you want to leave, Jade? Why not wait a bit longer? I know my grandson. He'll come around eventually."

I shook my head with absolute certainty.

She sighed deeply, realizing my mind was made up.

When we returned to the dining room, Killian's aunt and uncle were scrutinizing Leo.

"The older he gets, the more he looks like Killian," the aunt remarked. "Are you sure he's someone else's kid?"

In the entire family, only the Matriarch knew the truth.

But because she felt guilty about the way things started, she had never corrected the rumors. To everyone else, I was just a friend Killian had taken in after I was knocked up and abandoned by some random man.

Suddenly, Killian's icy voice rang out from the hallway.

"That brat isn't mine. Don't go insulting the Sterling bloodline by claiming him."

Killian strode into the room with Melody trailing behind him.

She was wearing a piece of haute couture, her makeup flawless. She looked like a literal princess.

I looked down at my own clothesDa plain cotton shirt and jeans. A wave of insecurity washed over me.

How could a woman like me ever hope to compete with a perfect princess for the heart of a prince? It was like trying to break a diamond with a pebble.

Leo saw Killian and ran toward him, shouting, "Daddy!" only to be ruthlessly pushed aside.

"I told you, I'm not your father. Stop calling me that."

He turned to Melody, his voice softening into a gentle explanation. "Don't mind them. I only took them in because I felt sorry for their pathetic situation."

I pulled Leo into my arms, trying to muffle his quiet whimpers.

The Matriarch frowned, her voice laced with displeasure. "This is a private family dinner, Killian. Why did you bring an outsider?"

Killian didn't seem to care what she thought. He let out a cold laugh. "Since you were so intent on interrupting my date with Melody, I figured I'd just bring her along."

He used to be so respectful toward his grandmother, but ever since I entered the picture, he had harbored a deep resentment for her. He only showed up for these dinners because of family protocol.

Sensing the tension, the aunt tried to smooth things over.

"Oh, look at you, Melody! You've grown into such a beautiful woman. Come, sit down and eat."

Melody was seated right next to me. Everyone at the table, except for the Matriarch, showered her with attention and praise.

Leo and I were treated like ghosts, tucked away in the corner, invisible to the world.

After making her rounds of polite toasts, Melody's eyes finally landed on me.

She looked me up and down with a smirk. "You know, you actually do look quite a bit like me."

Her tone was soft, but the underlying venom was unmistakable.

Killian chimed in immediately. "It's just a coincidence. She couldn't hold a candle to you."

To drive the point home, he pulled Melody closer and kissed her right in front of everyone.

The table erupted into cheers and congratulations. "It looks like a wedding is finally on the horizon! Killian, you're finally getting your dream girl."

The sound of my heart shattering was deafening. I could do nothing but squeeze Leo tighter.

Back at the villa that night, I lay in bed with Leo, unable to sleep.

"Mommy," he whispered. "Was that the first love Daddy was talking about? What does that even mean?"

"It means she's the person he's loved his whole life," I replied. "The person no one else can ever replace."

"Not even Mommy?"

I let out a bitter, tearful laugh. "No, baby. Mommy is just a cheap substitute."

Killian didn't come home that night.

The next morning, as I was making breakfast for Leo, the front door swung open.

I assumed it was Killian, so I didn't bother looking up.

But then I heard a strange boy's voice.

"Wow, that smells good! Mommy, I'm hungry. I want to eat that!"

Before I could react, a young boy barged into the kitchen, followed closely by Melody.

She leaned against the doorframe, her sweet persona from the night before replaced by a look of pure disgust.

"Did you hear him? My son is hungry. Hurry up and cook something for him."

I gripped the spatula tight, my blood boiling. "How did you get in here? Who gave you permission to enter my home?"

She laughed mockingly. "You're just a low-class stand-in. What right do you have to question me? I'm the real woman here. You just crawled into his bed while I was away. Killian must have been truly desperate to touch something like you."

Leo suddenly dashed into the kitchen and stood in front of me, shielding me.

"I won't let you talk to my mommy like that! This is our house! Get out!"

Melody's son didn't hesitate. He kicked Leo hard in the shin, sending him sprawling to the floor.

"This is my Daddy Sterling's house! He told me you're just stray dogs living here. You're the ones who should get out!"

I rushed to help Leo up, my heart breaking for him. Just as I was about to snap back at her, the door opened again.

Killian walked in, his face full of concern.

Melody's son immediately threw himself onto the floor and began wailing like he was being murdered.

"What happened?" Killian demanded.

He rushed over and scooped the boy into his arms, kissing his forehead with genuine affection.

He didn't even glance at his own son, who was still sitting on the floor, crying in pain.

"Daddy Sterling, I was hungry and asked for food, but the mean lady told the boy to hit me! It hurts!"

Melody added with a sob, "Killian, you don't have to hide it anymore. I can tell that's your son. It's our fault for being here. We shouldn't have bothered you."

Before I could utter a word of explanation, Killian spun around and slapped me across the face.

"I've let you live in this villa for years. I've provided everything for you. Have you still not learned your place?"

He turned his fury toward Leo. "And you! Is this how your mother raises you? To bully others? From now on, you are forbidden from calling me your father!"

Killian's eyes were bloodshot with rage. I had seen this look too many times.

Years ago, if I accidentally touched a Lego set Melody had given him, he would scream at me for hours.

If I even mentioned her name, he would smash everything in the house to pieces.

I didn't bother defending myself. What was the point? He didn't see us as human beings anymore.

But my silence didn't satisfy him.

He grabbed me by the arm like I was a piece of trash and dragged me into the bedroom, slamming the door behind us.

"My grandmother says you want a divorce?"

He pulled out the divorce papers I had already signed and slapped them against my face.

I forced a twisted, miserable smile. "Yes. Isn't this what you've always wanted? Once I'm gone, you two can finally be a real family."

He leaned in close, a cold, predatory look in his eyes. He gripped my jaw so hard I thought it might snap. "You think you can just escape your punishment? Think again!"

"You seduced me into touching you. You insisted on having that brat. Do you really think I'll let you off that easily?"

A cold dread settled in my stomach. I began to sob, begging him. "Please, just let us go. It's been eight years. Haven't you punished us enough?"

Suddenly, the door was pushed open.

Melody stood there, tears streaming down her face.

"Killian, am I interrupting something? I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have come back. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be fighting. Maybe I should just leave."

She turned to go, and Killian immediately chased after her, pulling her into his arms and whispering sweet things to calm her down.

"Where would you go? I can't have you and your son out on the streets. My home is your home. I'm the boss here. You stay. I'll make sure Jade takes good care of you both. Don't worry."

My heart felt like it had been dropped into a bucket of ice. I started to laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all.

He was keeping me here just so I could be their maid.

He truly knew how to torture me. He wanted me to spend every day watching the man I loved dote on another woman. It was a fate worse than death.

"Milo is hungry, isn't he? Come on, I'll take you guys out to eat. Don't cry anymore, buddy."

The three of them walked out of the house together, looking for all the world like a happy family, as if they hadn't just destroyed me.

Once they were gone, I called the Matriarch again.

"Matriarch, it's time for you to take responsibility for the mistake you made all those years ago."

"I only have one request. Help us get away. Make sure Killian Sterling never finds us."
