The Unreachable Wolf Queen

The Unreachable Wolf Queen

1.

The night Vanessa turned eighteen and shifted for the first time, my mother Grace stripped me of my family name. The entire pack watched.

My brother Caleb's hand cracked across my face. The force whited out my vision.

Listen close. From today, this family has one daughter. I have one sister.

Vanessa stood at the center of the crowd. Mom held her close. She was crying like a shattered porcelain doll, but her eyes landed exactly where they always did.

The wolf inside me went quiet. Not a whimper. Something deeper. A cord snapped. The pack bond that had tied me to this family disappeared from my chest without a sound.

I finally understood something with absolute clarity. To this wolf family, I had never been anything but the extra one.

So I left.

Commander Vance had been asking me to join the Vanguard Corps closed training program for months. That night, I signed the papers.

Mom and Caleb thought I was throwing a tantrum. They waited for me to crawl back and beg forgiveness.

A month later, when my bedroom had gathered a thick layer of dust, they finally went to the Preparatory Academy looking for me.

The Academy told them my file had been completely sealed and destroyed by the Werewolf Council. Classified. No access.

Sitting in the back of Commander Vance's armored vehicle, I had endured the tearing pain and severed that bond with my own hands.

That was the moment they finally panicked.

***

"Aurora, have you thought this through? Once the Vanguard Corps closed training begins, all contact with the outside world is cut off. Not temporarily. Completely. No phones. No messages. No pack bonds. This is not a joke."

Commander Vance's voice was heavy with warning.

I didn't hesitate.

"Commander, train me into your best soldier. I won't let you walk into that program alone."

He looked at me for a long time. Something in his eyes gave way. The kind of pride that comes from seeing too much and knowing better.

He stood and put his hand on my shoulder.

"That's my soldier." He exhaled slowly. "But you need to truly understand what this means. The Vanguard Corps is five years minimum. The training there is brutal enough to break Alpha-level wolves. I've seen it with my own eyes."

My father Arthur had told me the same thing once. I was ready then. I'm even more ready now.

"My father made it through," I said. "So will I."

The muscle in his jaw tightened. It always did whenever I mentioned Dad. They had been comrades in the same trench. He knew better than anyone why I was choosing this path, and he had never tried to talk me out of it.

He was silent for a moment. Then he asked the question I had been waiting for.

"Does Grace know? Does Caleb?"

Two faces flickered through my mind. The way Mom's eyes went flat the moment she looked at me. The way Caleb had always looked through me instead of at me.

My wolf made a low sound. Not a whimper. More like a goodbye.

"They won't care," I said. "Honestly? They'll probably open a bottle of champagne."

The Commander studied me for a long moment. His expression was complicated. The one he only wore occasionally. Half guilt. Half helplessness.

Then I picked up the classified confidentiality agreement and signed my full name. Every stroke deliberate.

Aurora Miller. Every letter clear.

"Go pack," he said. "Tomorrow. Three in the afternoon. I'll send a car."

When I stepped onto the lawn of that house, laughter spilled through the windows. The kind of loose, easy laughter that only exists when people have forgotten there's anyone outside their circle.

I pressed my lips together and pushed the door open.

The laughter stopped instantly. Three pairs of eyes landed on me.

Caleb set down the apple pie he'd been cutting halfway through. He swept that look over me. The one that had already convicted me before I opened my mouth.

"Go apologize to Vanessa. Now. You ruined her coming-of-age ceremony. The entire thing. Disappearing without a word after what happened. What exactly did you learn in human society?"

My hands curled into fists at my sides.

I knew they wouldn't believe me. They never did. But something inside me that hadn't completely died yet made me say it one last time.

"I didn't push her."

That sentence ignited something in Caleb. His eyes flooded with that deep red Alphas get when they lose control. The pressure of it hit like a wall.

"We all saw it with our own eyes."

Mom turned to Vanessa first. Her voice was thick with tenderness as she tucked a strand of hair behind Vanessa's ear.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. Mommy will make her apologize."

Then those eyes turned to me. Every trace of warmth erased.

"Bad luck follows you. Lies follow you. I saw it with my own eyes and you still dare to deny it. God, I don't know how I ended up with a daughter like you."

2.

The winter night wind crept through the window cracks. It turned the room into a freezer.

Three years of "curse." Now I was about to get a new title too.

My wolf curled tighter into herself, nose buried in her own tail. She hadn't whimpered in a long time. Nothing left to grieve.

No one remembered. Today was also my eighteenth birthday.

No one believed I hadn't touched Vanessa.

Vanessa reached out from the couch, gently patting Mom's heaving chest. She arranged her face into that look of tender understanding.

"Mom, don't talk to Aurora like that. She's your real daughter after all. Your blood. I'm just an adopted orphan who's been hogging your love and Caleb's love for years. Of course she doesn't like me. I completely understand."

"I'm sorry."

My own voice. Flat and abrupt. Cutting her off.

The room went quiet again.

Mom and Caleb both froze. Even Vanessa blinked in surprise.

I let out a slow breath and repeated it.

"It was my fault. I apologize."

This scene had played out countless times over the past three years. Every time, I had stubbornly refused to admit fault. Even when it was fake, I wouldn't say the words. My wolf would bristle, refusing to bow to a lie.

But I was leaving tomorrow.

If admitting fault could give them peace, could let me carry one decent memory out of my last twenty-four hours in this house, then fine. At least when I thought of them from some Vanguard Corps training base, my mind wouldn't be filled with nothing but curses and cold stares.

Caleb recovered first. That "I knew it" look spread across his face.

"Finally decided to say it. Good. You'd better not do it again. Vanessa only sprained her ankle this time. If you actually hurt her next time, an apology won't be enough."

I made a low sound of acknowledgment. Nothing more.

Facing a threat from my own brother, it would be a lie to say it didn't sting. But I pushed the ache down and turned to go upstairs.

Vanessa grabbed my wrist.

She smiled and handed me a freshly issued family ID card. She made sure I saw the name on it.

Vanessa Sol Miller.

"Sol." The only one.

The only daughter of the Miller family. The only sister.

Mom's voice drifted over from the couch. Casual. Dismissive.

"From now on, Vanessa is our family's only darling. Don't get confused."

Caleb nodded. Then he turned to Vanessa, his face full of doting affection, and apologized to her. For what? For that brief moment when he had said "we all saw it." For briefly, mistakenly treating me like a person who existed.

Vanessa giggled and jumped up, looping both arms around his neck. She was already negotiating for a limited edition handbag as compensation.

Mom noticed I still hadn't responded. She set her coffee cup down on the table with a heavy thud.

"Did you hear me? Are you mute?"

I kept my head down. My voice was quiet.

"I understand. From now on, only Vanessa."

After tomorrow, there wouldn't be an Aurora in this house either.

3.

I hurried upstairs. The voices behind me didn't stop.

"I say we just give the name Aurora to Vanessa. That wild girl raised in the slums deserves the name Dad gave her?"

"No. She's used it too long. I'm afraid Vanessa would catch the bad luck. Sol is perfect. Our family's only treasure."

"Mom loves me the most."

"Oh? And what about me, your brother? I don't love you?"

I closed the door and leaned my back against it. I slid down slowly until I was sitting on the carpet.

Aurora. The northern lights. The light that can pierce through darkness.

When Dad gave me that name, he said he wanted me to illuminate the entire wolf clan like the aurora.

Now, in Mom and Caleb's eyes, the name itself was the source of misfortune.

My wolf rested her chin on her front paws. She said nothing.

I got lost in a human town when I was three. My parents searched for nearly a year and couldn't find me. They couldn't bear the emptiness, so they eventually adopted a three-year-old girl from an orphanage, born the same month and day as me. They named her Vanessa. They used her to fill the gap of those missing years.

What they never expected was that I would come back.

Even growing up in the human world, without a pack, without anyone to teach me what I was, my wolf nature still bled through. Combat talent. Tracking instinct. A speed that made human coaches uneasy. At fifteen, I tested into the Werewolf Preparatory Academy on my own merits. I walked into a classroom where my father was teaching.

He dropped his thermos on the spot.

Later, he said it was the scent. A wolf's sense of smell is more honest than any language. He had recognized me before his conscious mind caught up.

He pulled me to an underground clinic for an emergency blood test. He didn't stop pacing the entire time we waited. Back and forth in the hallway, like a wolf who had found a trail but didn't dare confirm it yet.

I stood there watching him. That thought I had never dared to touch broke through the soil. What if it was real? What if this time, it was real?

Twelve years in orphanages. I had been through too many cycles of being adopted and returned. I knew better than anyone not to let hope grow too big.

When the results came back, my father held me and wept.

That was the first time I ever learned what it felt like to be recognized by someone.

On the drive back to the community, he told me everything about those fourteen years I had missed. Piece by piece. Including the adoption. He watched my expression carefully and made a solemn promise. He would not favor either child. Both daughters would be equally important.

His heartbeat was steady. He meant it.

I followed him home carrying hope.

I didn't know that would be the only complete night our family would ever have.

4.

The moment Mom saw me, she held me and cried. She wouldn't let go for a long time. Caleb, seventeen then and already broad-shouldered like an Alpha, stayed by my side the entire night. The air was thick with the calming pheromones he released without realizing it. Low and steady.

Eleven-year-old Vanessa took both my hands and called me big sister. Tears rolled down her face.

When Mom learned my name had been randomly assigned by a human orphanage, she pushed Dad to take me to City Hall that very day to change it. She wanted me to have my real name. The name that belonged to my wolf bloodline.

Aurora. The northern lights.

We never made it back home.

On a county road, a rogue wolf struck us. Feral. On the edge of a complete mental break. Blindly aggressive. My father shielded me with his body. The rogue tore out his throat before reinforcements arrived.

When Mom and Caleb got there, I was covered in blood.

They looked at me. I watched grief transform into something else in their eyes.

"You came back and Arthur died. You carry a curse. Why did you come back? Why didn't you just stay gone?"

Caleb's voice cracked open. Something between a cry and a howl.

"You're not my sister. You're a murderer."

After that, I had a small upstairs room. That was all.

Every drop of their love went to Vanessa.

Now called Vanessa Sol.

I moved to the edge of the bed and sat down.

Alright, I thought. So be it. If I die in the Vanguard Corps, and the odds aren't small, no one will have to go through the pain of losing someone again. It's the last thing I can do for them. They just won't know it.

My wolf didn't argue.

I slept lightly that night. Dad's face and Mom's voice kept alternating in my dreams.

When I woke, the pillow was wet. My heart was steady.

I packed everything that belonged to me into a black duffel bag. After three years of living there, there wasn't much.

When I came downstairs, Mom and Caleb were already sitting at the kitchen island, eating bacon and scrambled eggs. There was no plate for me. Three years of this. They had never once asked what I liked.

I heated a slice of toast in the microwave and ate it standing by the counter.

I didn't notice when Vanessa had come up beside me.

"Aurora, this family stopped having a place for you a long time ago. Mom and Caleb changed my name. Can't you see it? They won't forgive you. Ever."

Three years. For three years I had carried Dad's death on my back. I had taken their cold silence as the punishment I deserved. I owed them. It was a blood debt.

I missed the flicker of smugness in Vanessa's eyes. I answered her seriously.

"Then you'll be the only one by their side from now on. Take good care of them, Vanessa."

5.

At breakfast, I kept my mouth shut as usual and listened to the three of them laugh and chat.

Mom suddenly looked up. Her tone was the kind you use when you've just remembered something unimportant.

"You're graduating from the Preparatory Academy soon, right?"

It took me a second to realize she was speaking to me.

"MoD"

I saw her face immediately darken and stopped myself.

After Dad died, they stopped allowing me to call them Mom and brother. Before I left today, I had wanted to try one more time. Apparently not.

"Yes. This year."

I paused, thinking of Commander Vance's words. I should let them know I was leaving.

"I'm about toD"

"Enough." Mom waved her hand and cut me off impatiently. "Don't tell me which poor, struggling pack you're planning to rot away in after graduation. I'm not interested. I just wanted to remind you. Move out of this community as soon as you graduate. Stop being an eyesore here."

Caleb nodded. "We've been generous enough giving you three years of housing. You should be satisfied."

The words "I'm leaving today. I don't know when I'll be back" died in my throat.

Vanessa pouted. She put on that overdone innocent expression.

"You're all treating Aurora like this. When I grow up, are you going to kick me out too?"

Mom tapped her forehead with mock scolding. "Oh, sweetheart, you're Mommy's precious baby. How could Mommy ever treat you like that?"

Caleb was all doting affection. "Little princess, teasing me and Mom again. That girl with diluted wolf blood. Can she even compare to you?"

My fingers turned white around my glass.

"I'm done. Enjoy your meal."

I fled the dining room.

Deep winter. I pushed open the front door. The cold hit my face.

It was snowing. Tiny white specks drifting through the air. They landed on my face and melted into water, sliding down my cheeks.

Snow or tears. I couldn't tell anymore.

I wrapped my jacket tighter and walked to the family cemetery at the edge of town.

The day Dad was buried, Mom wouldn't let me attend the funeral. I could only hide in the shadows of the trees far away. I watched them put him in the ground.

After that, I was afraid. Afraid that Dad hated me too, even underground. Every year on his death anniversary, I could only stand outside the iron fence of the cemetery, looking at that granite headstone from a distance.

Today was the first time I truly walked up to it. I used my fingers to gently brush the snow off the stone, revealing his name.

"Dad, I'm leaving with the Commander for the Vanguard Corps today."

"Back then, you recognized me by scent. You said my body carried the blood of the purest warrior. You said I would surpass you. Don't worry. I won't let you down."
