The German Secret, Husband’s Hidden Baby

The German Secret, Husband’s Hidden Baby

1.

We've been married for six years, and my husband hasn't touched me in three months.

He says he's exhausted from work.

I've loved him for over a decade, so I believed him without a second thought.

But on my birthday, I overheard his friend asking him something in German.

Are you done with that girl you're keeping on the side? You were seeing her every day. I don't know how your body handles it.

"Doesn't your wife have a problem with this?"

Silas Finn exhaled a cloud of smoke, his expression indifferent.

"I haven't touched Willa in months. Quinn has better moves, and I'm not bored of her yet. It's just a shame she got pregnant."

"My wife doesn't want kids, so I gave Quinn a check. I'll send her to Europe in a few weeks to deal with the birth there."

I clenched my fists.

Tears fell silently down my face.

Silas noticed and asked me what was wrong, looking concerned.

I just shook my head.

"The cake you made is delicious. I'm just touched."

The cake was sweet, but as someone who understood German, my heart was overflowing with bitterness.

Six years of marriage.

Silas Finn was cheating on me.

He hadn't initiated intimacy for three months.

People say if a man stops bringing home the harvest, it's because he's planting seeds elsewhere.

I didn't want to believe it until a phone call changed everything.

That night, Silas was in the shower.

His phone buzzed on the nightstand.

It was a local number with no contact name saved.

My gut told me this wasn't just a random telemarketer.

I picked it up.

"Hello? Who is this?"

The person on the other end stayed silent.

After a few seconds, the line went dead.

They obviously recognized my voice.

In that moment, a hollow feeling settled in my chest.

It felt like something precious was slipping through my fingers.

To stop my mind from spiraling, I bypassed his passcode and started digging.

His wallpaper was a photo of us.

His profile picture was our backs as we held hands.

Even his social media feed was filled with posts about me.

I was almost ready to give up and tell myself it was a wrong number.

But then, I searched the phone number.

It belonged to his assistant, Quinn Shell.

I opened their chat history.

The messages looked professional.

It was all businessDschedules, meetings, and reports.

But my intuition screamed that it was too clean. I checked his bank statements instead.

That's where I found the rot.

He had sent multiple wire transfers to Quinn.

$5,200, 0-03,140Dnumbers that translated to 'I love you' in a coded language I knew all too well.

My heart physically constricted.

The truth was undeniable. Silas was unfaithful.

I gripped the phone, staring at our happy faces on the screen.

It felt like a cruel joke.

The man who once loved me more than life itself was now a stranger.

I met Silas when I was seventeen.

My parents had passed away from illness, and I was moved from the South to the cold streets of Chicago to live with distant relatives.

In a city where I had nothing, I wrapped myself in silence and introversion.

Because of my personality, I was an easy target at school.

Bullies sensed my weakness and made my life miserable.

Silas Finn was the one who stepped into the light for me.

He chased those people away and wrapped me in his jacket, which smelled like sunshine.

"Are you stupid?" he asked softly. "Why do you let them treat you like that?"

I was stunned.

From that day on, we were inseparable.

He became my best friend, my confidant, and eventually, my first love.

His parents didn't like me at first because of my family background.

Silas didn't care.

He dragged me into their living room and stood his ground.

"Mom, Dad, this is the woman I'm going to marry. It's her or no one."

His stubbornness eventually won them over.

He was the hope that gave my lonely life meaning.

Even when he went to Berlin for graduate school, our bond didn't break.

He video-called me every single day to share his life.

Two years later, he came back and we started our life together.

He treated me like royalty.

No matter how busy he was at the office, he'd come home and make sure the house was perfect.

Silas had given me his entire heart since we were kids.

I had no reason not to trust him.

But now, he had thrown it all away.

2.

A few minutes later, Silas walked out of the bathroom.

He sat next to me, drying his hair with a towel.

"Why the long face, babe?"

I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at him.

He was thirty now, and his features had sharpened into a rugged, handsome maturity.

Everyone envied our marriage.

"Willa, how did you get so lucky to land a man like Silas?" they'd ask.

I used to think I was the luckiest woman alive.

I thought I had a man who worshipped the ground I walked on.

Now I realized the truth.

A man can put you on a pedestal and give you half his company's shares.

And he can still crawl into someone else's bed at night.

"Nothing. Someone called your phone. I answered, but they hung up without saying a word."

"It was a local number. Probably a friend. You should check."

I handed him the phone and watched his face closely.

"Probably a wrong number. Don't worry about it."

He took the phone with perfect composure.

But I saw it. I saw his thumb twitch twice against the screenDa nervous habit he only had when he was lying.

We had been together far too long for him to hide that from me.

"Honey, go get some rest in the bedroom. I just remembered I have a few urgent files to finish for the office."

"Now? It's late."

"Yeah, the deadline is tight."

I didn't push him. I just nodded and told him to be careful.

Silas grabbed his coat and rushed out.

I sat on the sofa, watching the door close.

What kind of files required a CEO to leave his house in the middle of the night? He didn't even try to make the lie believable.

A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

Did he think I loved him so much that I was blind?

I bit my lip and called a friend who worked as a private investigator. I told him to follow Silas.

That night, Silas didn't come home.

The next morning, I woke up with a pounding headache. My friend had sent several messages.

"Willa, look at this for yourself."

"If this isn't a misunderstanding, I suggest you start gathering evidence for a lawyer."

My chest tightened.

Below the text was a video file.

My breath hitched.

That video was the key to a Pandora's box that would swallow my world.

With trembling hands, I pressed play.

In the video, Silas's car was parked on a side street. A young woman climbed into the passenger seat.

It was Quinn Shell.

The camera zoomed in.

The two of them were so wrapped up in each other they didn't notice they were being watched.

The sound of kissing and heavy breathing filled the room.

It felt like a knife was twisting in my heart.

Eventually, they stepped out of the car, looking disheveled.

Quinn held his hand, a smug, spoiled look on her face.

"Mr. Finn, I thought you forgot about me. Didn't you get enough at home? You're acting like a starved animal."

Silas's voice was husky, his eyes dark with lust.

"I haven't touched Willa."

He gripped the woman's neck lightly, pulling her close.

"My wife doesn't have your appetite. You're such a little brat."

Quinn didn't seem insulted. She pressed her body against his chest.

"Well, Mr. Finn, I'm all yours tonight."

"Don't cry later," he whispered.

They disappeared into an apartment complex.

When the video ended, I felt numb.

The sadness was there, but it was buried under a cold sense of finality.

I walked to the cabinet, grabbed a bottle of bourbon, and took a massive swing.

The liquid burned my throat, forcing tears from my eyes.

I sat on the floor, surrounded by the silence of our empty home.

I didn't understand why Silas did this.

But I knew one thing.

This marriage was over.

3.

That afternoon, once the alcohol had cleared my head, I went to see a lawyer.

I had the divorce papers drawn up.

Luckily, we didn't have children. Aside from the assets, we could sever ties relatively easily.

When I got home with the documents, Silas called to say he was going on a business trip.

By that night, the anonymous messages started.

It was a flurry of photos showing Quinn and Silas together.

I didn't need to guess who was sending them. Quinn wanted me to know.

I saw them at hot springs, skiing, and dining at five-star restaurants.

It didn't hurt as much as I expected.

In our eleven years together, we had done all those things.

We traveled every yearDAspen, Paris, the Northern Lights in Iceland.

Silas used to say he only wanted to see the world if I was by his side.

Now, he was just recycling our memories with a newer model.

Maybe eleven years was just too long.

Maybe he just got bored.

I tried to rationalize it, but my chest still throbbed with a dull ache.

He was the only man I had ever truly loved.

Silas returned three days later.

He brought me a gift, as usualDa diamond necklace that must have cost a fortune.

Whenever he stayed out late or traveled, he'd bring a bribe.

He called them "apology gifts" for not being the perfect husband.

He said he had to make up for the time he wasn't there to hold me.

In the past, I would have been thrilled.

Now, I couldn't even force a smile.

"I love it," I lied.

Silas didn't notice my lack of enthusiasm.

Or maybe he was just too exhausted from his time with Quinn to care.

"Glad you like it. I'm going to hit the shower."

He disappeared into the bathroom.

By the time he came out, I was already in bed, my back turned toward him.

We didn't speak.

He pulled me into his arms, but we were miles apart.

Then came my birthday.

Silas threw a lavish party, just like he always did.

The decorations and the cake were impeccable.

Our friends were all there, laughing and congratulating us on such a perfect marriage.

But when it was time for cake, the scene from the prologue repeated.

I heard his friend ask in German about the girl on the side.

I heard Silas admit he hadn't touched me in months.

I heard him say Quinn was pregnant and that he was going to pay her to go away and have the baby because I didn't like kids.

I clenched my fists.

I let the tears fall, pretending I was overwhelmed with joy.

Silas asked what was wrong, looking concerned.

"The cake you made is so good. I'm just so happy," I whispered.

In that moment, I hated that I had learned German for him.

4.

Silas saw my tears and smiled.

He leaned in to kiss my cheek, but I instinctively flinched away.

Even though I knew I was leaving, I wasn't ready to make a scene in front of everyone.

I needed to maintain some dignity.

I quickly made an excuse.

"A patient at the hospital needs me. I have to go."

Silas frowned, looking disappointed.

"But it's your birthday. Can't you take one night off?"

I touched his cheek, mocking the affection I used to feel.

"It's okay. Besides, I realized I left your gift in my desk at the clinic."

Our relationship started on my birthday.

So we always exchanged gifts on this day.

Every year, I'd custom-design a suit for him.

This year was no different. I had finished it months ago, before I knew about the betrayal.

Silas sighed but gave in, looking at me with that fake, doting expression.

"Fine. But blow out the candles first. I made this ice cream cake myself; it'll melt if you wait."

I nodded.

He led me to the cake and we blew out the candles together.

"I want to be with Willa forever," he announced loudly to the room. "I'm going to spend the rest of my life making her happy!"

The crowd cheered.

"God, Silas, give it a rest! You're making us all look bad."

"Eleven years and they're still like newlyweds. I'm so jealous."

I felt like I was watching a play from the back row.

Eleven years.

And he was a stranger.

I pulled my hand out of his.

"I'll go grab the gift. Don't wait up if it gets late. Have fun with your friends."

I walked out.

After handling some paperwork at the hospital, I went back to the venue with the suit.

This was our eleventh year. I wanted a clean ending.

But as I reached the door, I saw Quinn slip into the private lounge.

I stood there, gripping the gift bag, feeling a wave of nausea.

Was he really that desperate?

He couldn't even wait an hour for his mistress?

My heart felt like it was being shredded.

I leaned against the wall, my eyes burning.

I took out my phone and called my best friend, Cheryl.

"Cheryl, that research position in the desert... I'll take it."

My hospital had a classified project out west, studying brain tumors.

My father died of a brain tumor. My mother followed soon after from the grief.

Finding a cure was my life's mission.

But the project required total seclusion. Years without contact with the outside world.

I had hesitated because of Silas.

Cheryl, who was also on the team, had called me a fool for choosing a man over my career.

Now, my decision was final.

"Are you serious?" Cheryl asked. "I thought you couldn't breathe without your precious Silas."

I swallowed hard.

"I've realized that I need to live for myself."

I didn't tell her about the cheating. Her temper was too short; she'd probably burn his house down.

I hung up and took a deep breath, steadying my nerves.

5.

Back at home.

I started sorting through what to keep and what to trash.

I pulled out our old photo albumsDeleven years of memories.

He really did love me once.

When we were young, a car had lost control and sped toward us.

Silas didn't hesitate. He pushed me out of the way and took the hit.

He was in a coma for a week.

When he woke up, I cried until my eyes were swollen. I promised I'd never leave him.

But love is a fragile thing.

And betrayal is the one thing I can't forgive.

I tore the photos into pieces and threw them in the trash.

"What are you doing?!"

Silas was standing in the doorway. He looked at the scraps in the bin, his eyes turning red.

"Willa, why did you destroy the photos? Are you upset?"

I didn't want him to know the truth yet.

"I'm getting a new digital album made. I wanted to clear out the old physical copies before they turned yellow."

He relaxed slightly and pulled me into a hug.

"Okay. As long as you're happy, I'm happy."

I booked my flight for three days later.

I spent those seventy-two hours erasing every trace of myself.

The wedding ring. The letters. Every scrap of our history.

He was so busy with Quinn he didn't even notice the house getting emptier.

On the day I was leaving, Silas caught me with my suitcase.

"Willa? Where are you going?"

I set the bag down and lied smoothly.

"The hospital has an emergency surgical case on-site. I'll be gone for a bit. Why are you so worried? It's not like I'm running away."

He let out a breath and leaned in close.

"I'll go with you. You've been distant lately. I'm scared you don't love me anymore."

"You're overthinking. How could I not love you?"

I pulled a document from my purse, hiding the title.

"Oh, sign this for me, babe. It's a surprise I've been working on."

I gave him my best excited look.

Years ago, I bought him a star in a registry and had him sign a document like this.

He remembered that. He smiled warmly and signed the papers without reading them.

"So, what's the surprise this time? Can I see?"

Before he could flip the page, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

"Wait a second, Willa. I have to take this."

He walked out onto the balcony.

I watched his silhouette, my expression cold.

I had seen the caller ID. It was Quinn.

I watched him smile. I watched his eyes light up in a way they hadn't for me in years.

He talked for five minutes then came back.

"Willa, I'm sorry. There's a crisis at the office. I have to go."

He didn't even wait for me to reply before he vanished.

I didn't linger either. I took my suitcase and headed for the airport.

Before boarding, I received a text from Quinn. It was an ultrasound photo.

"Willa, I'm carrying Silas's baby. Please just let him go."

I didn't reply to her.

Instead, I forwarded the message to Silas with a final note.

"Your little friend is making a scene. Maybe you should handle it."

"By the way, those papers you signed? They were divorce documents. Check the mail for your copy."

I threw my phone into a trash can and walked toward the gate.
