After Being Left at the Altar, My Amnesia Made Her Beg for a Second Chance

On my wedding day, Vivian was late because she was busy taking care of her ex.

Then, during the vows, she threw my diamond ring on the floor and bolted right in front of everyone.

I'm sorry, Jason. He waited for me for five years. I can't marry you.

But later, after my car accident wiped my memory clean, Vivian dropped everything.

She came begging me through tears to marry her.

"Can you... just wait a little longer for me?"

That was the last text Vivian sent me on our wedding day.

Standing below the altar in a sharp black tux, I clenched my phone, anxiously awaiting her arrival.

Down below, thirty tables packed with our friends and family buzzed with low conversation.

But now, more and more eyes were darting towards me.

I could feel the weight of their stares, hear the hushed whispers.

"Where's the bride?" "What's going on?"

I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly dry. Yeah, they were definitely talking about Vivian.

We were already half an hour past the scheduled start time. Still no Vivian.

Up on the stage, the officiant looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

He kept throwing me desperate glances, trying to crack jokes to lighten the mood that was sinking faster than a stone.

"Jason, any word from Vivian?" His voice was strained.

I forced a grim smile and nodded, pulling out my phone to call her again.

Ring Ring Ring

A moment later, I hung up, frustration simmering. Seventeen calls today.

Seventeen! And not a single damn answer.

Early this morning, as I was at the venue early, going over last-minute details with the officiant, her text popped up: "Can you... just wait a little longer for me?"

Since then, all my messages had vanished into a void, unanswered.

Panic gnawing at me, I finally tracked down her mom.

"Mrs. White? Have you heard from Vivian?"

"Vivian?" Her mom looked mildly puzzled. "She got a call super early, didn't even eat breakfast, just grabbed a cab and rushed out. Wasn't that you?"

My blood ran cold. I hadn't called her this morning. Not once.

So who had? Who was important enough for Vivian to ditch her own wedding prep for?

Suddenly, my body stiffened. I remembered something Vivian had mentioned offhandedly weeks ago.

Today was the day Luke, her precious high school sweetheart, was flying back into town.

And coincidentally, his flight landed this very morning.

Oh god. No.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Vivian had she actually run back to Luke?

The pieces clicked together C the weird text, the vanishing act, the timing.

A cold dread settled over me, thick and suffocating. I could barely breathe.

Luke, the golden boy was Vivian's childhood neighbor, her first love, the guy who supposedly had it all.

They were the picture-perfect couple in college, everyone said they were practically engaged.

Until graduation, Luke suddenly announced he was jetting off abroad for "grad school" and ghosted her completely. Vivian was wrecked for months.

The memory twisted like a knife in my chest. I turned away from the crowd, hiding my face.

Luke back today, Vivian missing Coincidence? Yeah, right. We all knew what that meant.

Screech!

The side door to the hall banged open. I whipped around.

There she was. Vivian was in her stunning white gown, the delicate lace headpiece framing her face. She looked beautiful.

"Sorry," she gasped, clutching her chest. "I... I'm late."

Relief flooded through me. My fist unclenched. Maybe I'd been paranoid.

Maybe it was just traffic, or a flat tire. Maybe Luke wasn't involved at all.

We'd been together for five years, after all.

Five years since I pulled her, soaking wet and heartbroken, out of the river that day.

Five years of building her back up, supporting her, working my ass off to give her everything.

She knew what this day meant. Her family knew. She wouldn't throw it away for some guy who ditched her, right?

"It's okay, Viv. Let's get up there."

I managed a shaky smile, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear before leading her up to the altar.

The ceremony began. We got to the vows.

"Jason," the officiant asked, "do you take Vivian to be your lawfully wedded wife?

"To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"

I slid the diamond ring onto her finger, my voice steady. "I do."

He turned to Vivian. "Vivian, do you take Jason to be your lawfully wedded husband?

"To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"

But Vivian just stared blankly. The officiant had to repeat the question.

"Viv? You okay?" I squeezed her hand, trying to ground her.

Her next words weren't just a rejection. They were venomous snakes sinking fangs into my skin, my bones, dragging me down into darkness.

"Jason," she whispered, but the mic caught it, amplifying her voice through the silent hall.

"Can we... postpone the wedding? Just for a few days?"

The entire room froze. You could hear a pin drop. Every single pair of eyes felt like a laser burning into me.

I froze for a second, then forced a smile, taking her hand.

"Viv, honey, come on. Everyone's here. Don't joke like that."

She yanked her hand away. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and bit her lip.

"Jason," she said, her voice tight, "I'm not joking. Today... it's my fault. But we can't do this right now."

My hand, still hovering in the air where hers had been, started to tremble. That cold dread was back, crawling up my spine.

I ignored the stares, the gasps.

"Why?" My voice cracked. "We fought so hard to get here. Isn't marrying me... good enough?"

Her eyes darted away, refusing to meet mine.

Fear, thick and cloying, wrapped around me like a net.

Vivian stayed silent. Finally, she bit her lip.

"I... I'm just not ready yet. Jason, please, just give me a little more time? There's... something I need to handle."

Her voice faded to a whisper. I already knew the answer.

"It's Luke, isn't it?"

She flinched like I'd slapped her. Her face went sheet-white.

"Luke... he has liver cancer. He flew back today for surgery."

Her voice trembled. "He... he needs someone. He has no one else."

A bitter laugh choked me. So that's where she'd been all morning.

Playing nurse to Luke. As for his cancer, I wasn't surprised in the least.

Luke was always a train wreck, partying non-stop.

His whole "grad school" story was a complete fabrication.

I knew because five years ago, I was the resident on duty when he brought some random girl in, asking about abortion options.

He didn't leave for school. He just ran from his messes, dumping Vivian when it got too complicated.

For five years, I picked up the pieces of her shattered heart.

I helped her heal. And now, just hearing Luke needed surgery, and she was ready to bail.

I sucked in a breath, fighting the wave of panic crashing over me.

My eyes darted to my mom in the front row.

She'd raised me alone after Dad left, working herself to the bone. Recently she was diagnosed with a stroke risk.

Her dying wish was to see me married, settled.

If this wedding imploded... I couldn't do that to her.

Gritting my teeth, I leaned close to Vivian, my voice low and urgent.

"Viv, please. Let's just finish the ceremony. It won't take long. Please?"

She stubbornly shook her head and slid the diamond ring off her finger.

"Jason, I know what you're worried about. But this is life or death! His surgery is imminent. He needs someone right now."

Her voice took on a pleading note.

"I love you. I promise. When I get back, we'll do it properly. A bigger wedding. Anything you want. Okay?"

She kept talking, but her words blurred into static.

White noise filled my ears. Our promises, our shared life, ripped apart in an instant.

She looked so restless, so desperate to be anywhere but here.

Our wedding day, the most important day of my life, meant nothing to her.

I knew it was pointless. Her mind was made up.

Her body was here, but her heart was already miles away, in some hospital room with Luke.

Seeing my silence, she bit her lip again, pressed the ring back into my hand, and gently kissed my cheek.

But I felt no warmth.

"Jason, wait for me," she whispered.

Then she grabbed her skirts and ran. She bolted down the aisle and out the door.

I watched her go, my fist clenched so tight my knuckles popped, veins standing out on my neck. Rage and betrayal warred with a crushing, humiliating pain.

Five years. Five years of my life were poured into her but it was just me fooling myself.

Her heart had never been mine.

"Vivian! Where are you going?!" Her parents shot up from their seats, shouting after her.

She didn't even glance back. She just disappeared.

Every single person in that room turned to stare at me. The whispers started, sharp and cruel.

"The bride ran off!"

Each word was a dagger, shredding what was left of my dignity.

I knew it after today, I'd be the biggest joke in the world.

I clenched my jaw, the urge to flee overwhelming.

When I looked up again, I was already out on the street.

But the image of Vivian's retreating back haunted me. That final, decisive run.

HONK! HONK!

Before I could react, an out-of-control car sped toward me.

The next moment, darkness swallowed me. I felt my insides shatter before I lost consciousness completely.

I woke up in a hospital room.

"He's awake! Jason's awake!"

I blinked, my vision blurry. Vivian's parents and a couple of doctors hovered over me.

Her dad looked relieved for a split second, then his face crumpled with guilt.

"Jason, son... take it easy. Don't get upset. Vivian... it's my fault. I didn't raise her right. When she gets back, I'll make sure she apologizes properly!"

Seeing me silent, her mom looked even more worried, raising her hand as if swearing an oath.

"Jason, honey, don't worry! We took care of your mom. She just needs rest, she'll be fine! The wedding... we'll pick another date! We'll pay for everything! Please, Jason, don't do anything rash!"

I stared at them, my mind completely blank.

After a long moment, I rubbed my temple. "Who... who are you?" My voice sounded rough. "Who's Vivian?"

Their faces went slack with shock.

"Jason! It's us!" Her dad leaned closer. "Your in-laws!"

"Jason, honey, don't joke like that!" her mom pleaded.

I frowned, genuinely bewildered.

"Seriously, who are you people? Why am I here? If you don't explain, I'm calling the cops."

Seeing me actually reach for the call button, they scrambled for the doctors.

Soon, a team of specialists whisked me away for scans.

Later, one of them explained: detailed results in three days, but preliminarily, it looked like selective amnesia caused by the concussion and trauma.

As I was getting discharged, Vivian's parents stuck to me like glue, calling me "son-in-law," insisting on taking care of me.

I thought they were nuts or scammers. I didn't know them!

"No such thing as a free lunch," right? I tried to brush them off and call a cab.

Seeing my icy "back off" vibe, they exchanged worried glances.

Her dad hesitantly asked, "Jason... you really don't remember Vivian? Your fiance?"

Her mom chimed in, watching my face closely. "Yes! You saved her life! Pulled her out of the river!"

They launched into stories about "us," searching my face for any flicker of recognition.

But I didn't know any Vivian.

I glared. "Look, I don't know any Vivian." I pulled out my phone to finally call that cab.

Then a text popped up. From a contact named "Girlfriend ??".

"Jason, we need to talk."

I stared at the screen, baffled. The profile pic was some cutesy puppy. "Who the hell is this?"

I muttered aloud, disgusted. "Seriously? What kind of prank is this? Using puppy filters? Get a life."

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Vivian's parents gaped at me, eyes wide as saucers.

Her dad fumbled with his own phone, pulling up a photo and shoving it under my nose.

The image left me stunned, unable to believe my eyes.
