The Ungrateful Niece, My Rebirth My Life
In my past life, my sister-in-law gave birth to twins. She kept the boy but wanted to throw the girl away.
My heart broke for the child, so I stepped in to help raise my niece. I gave her everything.
But when she grew up, she became greedy for my wealth. She staged a car accident and murdered me.
Now that I've been reborn, I'm only living for myself. Those kids belong to them, and they can raise them themselves.
I opened my eyes and realized I was back on the day my sister-in-law was in labor.
Knowing it was twins, my mother, Martha, was pacing the hospital hallway. She kept praying for two boys to carry on the Vance family name.
My brother, Logan, sat on a chair with his legs crossed. He was focused on a game on his phone, looking completely indifferent.
The doctor came out to congratulate us. It was one boy and one girl. A perfect pair, just like my brother and me.
As soon as Martha heard the news, her face dropped. she shot a nasty look my way and started her usual petty talk.
"What good is a daughter? They never help the family or their brothers. They're just selfish."
I sneered in my heart. She was trying the same old moral kidnapping routine. In this life, sorry, but I have no morals.
She could say whatever she wanted. I didn't care anymore.
Logan's joy of being a first-time father didn't even last five minutes. The sound of the crying babies gave him a headache, and he looked incredibly annoyed.
Nobody cared about my sister-in-law, Cecilia. She lay on the hospital bed, looking embarrassed and disappointed, groaning in pain. She eventually looked at me with a resentful gaze.
I turned my back and ignored her.
Your parents don't care about you and your husband won't look after you. Instead of hating them, you're holding a grudge against me?
"Mom, Cecilia is out of surgery safely. I have work to do, so I'm going back to the office to finish some reports."
I grabbed my bag to leave, but Martha caught my arm.
"Your brother just had a son! The Vance legacy is secured. As his sister, don't you have something to show for it?"
I let out a sudden laugh and started counting on my fingers for them.
"Since Cecilia got pregnant, who paid for every single cent of her food and supplies? I even paid for the prenatal check-ups and the delivery fees. What more do you want? Should I just be the husband instead?"
Martha didn't expect me to stop being her obedient little puppet. She was stunned and speechless.
Seeing that his mother lost face and there was no more money to grab, Logan shouted at me.
"How dare you talk to Mom like that! What the hell is wrong with your attitude?"
"I'm so sorry, Mom. My attitude is terrible. I've always been so submissive with you, unlike Logan, who yells and curses at you every day."
I cleared my throat and clapped my hands together as if I had made a big decision.
"From now on, I'll learn from Logan. I'll only care about myself and never spend a single penny on anyone else."
Logan's face turned bright red from my sarcasm. He rolled up his sleeves and looked like he was about to hit me.
I stepped back quickly, dodging his fist.
The doctors and nurses heard the noise and came over to stop him. Only then did Logan back down.
I checked the time and planned to get back to work immediately.
In this world, the only thing that gives you peace of mind is the money you earn yourself.
Martha blocked my path again, looking like she wouldn't stop until she got what she wanted.
I didn't have time for her long-winded speeches. I pulled a pre-prepared cash envelope from my bag and handed it to her. That was the only way to escape.
Behind me, Logan was still ranting. He kept calling me heartless and an ungrateful bitch.
I didn't bother responding. If I were truly heartless, I wouldn't have ended up so miserable in my last life.
In my previous life, when the twins had their three-month party, Martha ordered me to attend.
Besides wanting more gift money, they planned to dump my niece on me to raise.
Martha was always sexist, and Cecilia complained that taking care of two kids was too exhausting. Logan's income was tiny, and the whole family was a mess because of the babies.
In the end, they decided I should carry their burden for them.
Back then, I looked at that poor, abandoned little girl and felt too much pity. After all, the child was innocent and so tiny.
I spent a massive amount of time, energy, and money to raise my niece. Instead of gratitude, Logan's family just gave me cold words and complaints whenever things weren't perfect.
After my niece grew up, Cecilia started spreading rumors. She told everyone I had snatched her daughter away because I was a lonely woman with no husband of my own.
Over time, my niece grew to resent me. Once she found out I had a huge savings account, she teamed up with her parents to murder me.
This time, I'm cutting that tragedy off at the root.
Lily is their child. Why should I be the one stepping over the line to raise her?
I showed up at the three-month celebration as invited.
Cecilia took my gift envelope and felt how thin it was. Her face darkened instantly.
I pretended not to notice. I walked straight into the hall like any other guest.
From a distance, I saw Cecilia pull Logan aside. She pointed at my envelope and whispered angrily.
Logan got furious and immediately went to find Martha.
A moment later, Martha marched toward me, looking like she was ready for a fight.
"It's your niece and nephew's big day! How could you be so shameless to bring such a small gift?"
Logan and Cecilia followed behind her, nodding and accusing me of being a cheapskate.
The other guests started gathering around to watch the drama. They began pointing fingers at me as well.
I snatched the envelope back, tore it open, and started counting the bills in front of everyone.
It wasn't a huge amount, but it was still more than what the other guests had given. I loudly asked everyone how much they had put in their envelopes.
The guests all lowered their heads and went silent, awkwardly shuffling away.
I wasn't going to be a pushover like in my last life. I immediately started crying loudly, venting about all my sacrifices over the years.
I talked about how I started working early to support the family. I lived frugally and sent most of my paycheck home every month.
I listed every cent I had spent on Logan's education, his jobs, and his wedding. I pointed out that he had never even mentioned paying me back.
Before I could even finish, the three of them couldn't stand the embarrassment. They cut me off harshly.
They dragged me to a corner, complaining that I was talking nonsense and making them look like a joke.
I straightened my clothes and looked at them with a fake innocent face. "God is my witness, every word I said is the absolute truth!"
Since the party was full of friends and relatives, Martha was afraid of losing more face. She had to let it go.
Logan and Cecilia looked at me with pure hatred, like they wanted to eat me alive. I didn't care. I focused on the food, making sure I ate enough to make up for my gift money.
When they came to my table for a toast, Cecilia tried to act casual. "Avery is at that age where she's still single. What will she do when she gets old?"
I raised my glass.
"My life isn't your concern, Cecilia. I'm healthy, I make good money, and I can enjoy myself. My future is secured."
I paused and spoke again before she could interrupt.
"The twins are still small. You should focus your energy on your own kids and stop sticking your nose into other people's business."
Cecilia was stunned. Her hand holding the glass froze in mid-air, and she couldn't find a single word to say.
Seeing this, Logan quickly jumped in. "Avery, you're getting older. If you don't want to marry, you at least need a child to take care of you. Why don't you"
"You're right. I'm actually planning to adopt a little boy. It'll be my way of doing charity and helping society."
Logan panicked the second I said that. His voice jumped several octaves.
"Other people's kids will never be loyal to you! They're outsiders! How could you leave your money to an outsider!"
I looked at them coldly. They wanted my property and my money, but they were too cowardly to say it out loud. It was pathetic.
I stood up and raised my voice so everyone at the table could hear me.
"Today is a happy day for the twins. I want to wish Logan and Cecilia the best in raising these two children into successful adults."
Everyone clapped and offered their congratulations. The couple had the words to dump their daughter on me stuck in their throats.
Seeing them look so frustrated made me feel great. I even grabbed a few more bites of the steak.
That evening, my doorbell rang. Looking through the peep-hole, I saw Martha, Logan, Cecilia, and the kids blocking my door.
They were determined to dump Lily on me tonight.
I had brushed them off at the party, so now they were trying to corner me at home.
I was afraid they would just drop the baby and run the moment I opened the door. I stayed quiet and pretended I wasn't there.
My phone rang. Martha yelled as soon as I picked up.
"Where the hell are you? Logan, Cecilia, and the babies have been waiting at your door forever! Open up right now!"
I thought for a second and replied. "I'm taking a walk in the park. If you have something to say, come find me there."
Once I was sure they were gone, I snuck out through the back exit to the park.
Martha was holding Lily, trying to guilt-trip me about how hard Logan and Cecilia had it. She begged me to raise Lily for the sake of the family.
Logan and Cecilia chimed in, saying the child would take care of me when I was old. They made it sound like they were doing me a favor.
If I hadn't been murdered by Lily in my past life, I might have actually believed their lies.
I refused them directly. I claimed my work was too busy and my bills were too high to take on a child.
Seeing that I wasn't budging, Martha started a scene. She sat on the ground and began wailing.
"How did I raise such an ungrateful daughter? Her niece is starving, and she won't even help! How can an aunt be so heartless!"
It was evening, and the neighbors were all out for walks. They swarmed around to watch the drama.
Martha kept accusing me of being rich but refusing to help my brother raise his three-month-old daughter.
The neighbors started whispering. They talked about how pitiful the baby was and how hard it is to be a mother of twins.
I came up with a plan and cleared my throat.
"I have a mortgage and a car loan to pay. Life is stressful for me too. But if you really can't afford to raise them, give me your son, Zion. I'll make sure he never goes hungry."
The second they heard I wanted their precious boy, the Vance family heir, they all screamed no at the same time.
Martha jumped up from the ground like a cat. She stood in front of Cecilia and the boy, afraid I would actually take him.
"Look at this, everyone. Both children are family. If they want to give a child away, shouldn't the person raising them at least get to choose?"
I mocked them coldly, exposing their real motives.
Sure enough, as soon as Zion was mentioned, the three of them went into defense mode. You'd think the kid was the Prince of England or something.
The crowd realized what was happening. They saw the family only wanted the boy and were trying to get rid of the girl. The neighbors started criticizing them instead.
The three of them slunk away in shame amidst the chatter of the crowd.
After that, they stayed quiet for a while, probably afraid I'd try to take Zion again.
One night, in the middle of the night, Logan called me, sounding frantic.
"Avery, Zion has a fever! Get over here right now!"
Zion Vance was the name of my one-year-old nephew.
My sexist brother and his wife still hadn't given my niece a proper name. They just called her "the girl."
But Zion's name was something they paid a fortune to a fortune-teller for.
"Why should I come? I'm not a doctor. If he's sick, take him to the ER!"
I stayed in bed, comfortably watching a movie.
If it were Lily who was sick, I might have worried a little about whether they'd actually pay for her treatment.
But since it was Zion, I knew they'd spend their own money to save him. I didn't need to lift a finger.
"I'm busy. Just take him to the hospital. Don't waste time."
I stretched and gave them some honest advice.
"What could be more important than your nephew? Do you have a heart? He has a high fever! If you can't come, just Venmo us some money!"
Logan was getting aggressive again. He just wanted to milk me for more cash.
I didn't move. He wasn't my kid. If his own parents wouldn't take care of him, why should I?
Logan started screaming curses over the phone. I could hear Cecilia in the background complaining about how stingy I was.
Then, Logan and Cecilia started fighting with each other. I heard the sound of glass breaking, a physical scuffle, and someone slamming the door.
I hung up and went back to sleep.
I heard later that they took Zion to a top hospital. They did every test imaginable and stayed up all night for him.
Lily had a fever too, but they just took her to a cheap, shady clinic for some basic antibiotics.
I felt a little sorry for her. Overusing antibiotics at that age is terrible for the immune system.
But then I remembered the feeling of my car brakes failing and the crash she caused to get my inheritance. All my pity vanished.
In this life, they have to walk their own paths. Whatever happens to them is their own destiny.
The next day, Cecilia posted on social media, blaming Lily for getting Zion sick. She complained that girls were just expensive and troublesome.
Their backward thinking disgusted me. The misery they were living in was exactly what they deserved.
People like them are rotten to the core. You can't change them, so I chose to stay away.
My company announced a relocation plan for an office in London.
In my last life, I had turned it down because I was too busy raising Lily.
This time, I was the first to sign up. I fought for the position with everything I had.
A few years abroad would keep me away from Logan's family and help me build my career.
I packed everything in secret. I sold my house, put the money in my own account, and prepared to move.
By the time my parents and Logan found out, I was already walking the streets of London.
A friend back home told me that they went to my old apartment and screamed like lunatics. The new owner had to call the cops several times. They only stopped when they were threatened with jail time.
Since I had blocked their numbers and told my friends not to share my info, they eventually gave up.
I had a few years of absolute peace.
Everything was getting better.
But I knew this wasn't over yet.
I finally boarded the plane back home.
