The Stolen Surgery Money
My daughter was fighting for her life in the ICU.
Instead of staying by her side, my husband took the surgery money I had spent months raising.
He gave every cent to his childhood bestie, Holly, to pay off her debts.
I begged him on my knees to leave at least a portion for our child's treatment.
He just sneered, thinking I was acting out of jealousy.
"Can you stop making a scene? Holly and I are just friends. It's nothing like that!"
Because of the delay in surgery, my daughter eventually died in that cold hospital bed.
While I was grieving, Holly posted photos of her luxury vacation.
"Thanks to my favorite boy for the travel funds! Besties for life!"
In the photo, my husband and she were holding hands, their fingers interlaced like a couple in a honeymoon phase.
I left the divorce papers on the table and blocked him on everything.
I vanished from his world completely.
He spent the rest of his life searching for me like a madman.
......
To pay for Hazel's surgery, I had begged everyone I knew.
I borrowed from every friend and relative, but it still wasn't enough.
I called my husband, Kade, dozens of times.
He never picked up.
In a state of pure agony and despair, Hazel passed away in my arms.
Her little body had been ravaged by the illness until she was barely recognizable.
I held her cold body as I walked out of the hospital, feeling completely numb.
All my strength had left me.
My mind was filled with images of her when she was still healthy and smiling.
The cruelest pain in this world is a parent burying their child.
I thought she had a chance after I managed to raise a significant sum through a local charity drive.
But Kade had quietly emptied the account and transferred the money.
By the time I found out, it was too late.
The money was already in Holly's hands.
I called him repeatedly, moving from screaming accusations to pathetic pleading.
I even threw away my dignity and wailed in the hospital corridor, hoping he'd care about our daughter.
All I got in return was his growing impatience.
"Have you had enough yet? You'll say anything just to manipulate me!"
"You're actually using our daughter's health to scam money from our relatives?"
"As a mother, how can you be so wicked that you'd curse your own child?"
"You don't deserve to be a parent!"
He refused to believe that Hazel was actually sick.
He spoke about taking the money as if it were a minor errand.
"Holly was in deep trouble and needed the cash urgently, so I gave it to her. Think of it as doing a good deed to balance out your lies!"
"Using scammed money for our kid? Aren't you afraid of bad karma?"
In his memory, Hazel was still a healthy, vibrant girl.
But he had forgotten that we had been separated for over six months after a massive fight.
He hadn't seen his daughter in ages.
Kade had declared that until I admitted my mistakes, I shouldn't even dream of seeing him.
I didn't know where he lived or where he spent his nights.
He even warned me never to show up at his office, claiming I would embarrass him.
When I was truly desperate, I called to ask him for a loan.
We spoke like complete strangers.
But he convinced himself I only wanted the money to fuel my vanity and refused immediately.
That was why I had to borrow from friends.
I never expected him to pull the rug out from under me like this.
In a final act of desperation, I sent him photos and videos of Hazel in her hospital bed.
He insisted I was using filters and staging the whole thing.
"Jade, I never realized you could be this shameless!"
"You're forcing our daughter to act in your little plays? How is she supposed to face society later?"
We had our issues, but I never thought he could be this delusional during a life-and-death crisis.
He judged my money as dirty, yet he had no problem handing it over to his childhood friend.
I couldn't take it anymore.
I drove straight to Holly's house to corner them.
I wanted to look her in the eye and ask how she could spend my daughter's life-saving money without a shred of guilt.
2.
Kade and I had been married for years, and Holly had been a shadow over us the entire time.
I had asked him countless times to set some boundaries with her.
He always insisted she was just a friend.
She, in turn, called him her "male bestie."
Male bestie.
The very phrase made my skin crawl.
It was just a fancy term for two people enjoying an emotional affair without the label.
And because of that, I was expected to accept a third person in my marriage.
For Hazel's sake, I chose to endure it.
I didn't want her childhood to be defined by her parents fighting.
No matter what the argument was about, I was always the one to bow my head and apologize.
That changed one day when I came home from work early.
I found Holly lying in our marriage bed, wearing my favorite silk pajamas.
I lost it and kicked her out of the house.
Kade came running out of the study when he heard the commotion.
He accused me of having a filthy mind while he shielded Holly.
"Holly came over to help me clean the house! That's supposed to be your job!"
"Instead of thanking her, you're throwing her out?"
"She worked so hard she was sweating. Her clothes were in the wash, so she borrowed yours. What's the big deal?"
"If you keep acting like a psycho, we're getting a divorce!"
He was using the threat of divorce to force me into submission again.
But that time, I fought back.
He slammed the door and left.
He hadn't spent a single night at home since.
Even when Hazel cried for her daddy, he would only grant her a brief FaceTime call.
Those calls happened maybe a handful of times.
Thinking back on everything, I realized I had been such a fool.
When I reached Holly's house, I hammered on the door like a woman possessed.
The moment it opened, before I could even see who it was, a heavy slap landed on my face.
It was Kade.
His eyes were full of irritation and rage.
"Jade, are you freaking kidding me? You came all the way here to throw another tantrum?"
His brow was furrowed with a disgust so deep it felt like he was looking at trash.
When I didn't speak, his tone turned into a cold command.
"Since you're here, go inside and grab Holly's suitcases. We're leaving for a trip."
I noticed that the side wall of Holly's house was covered in spray-painted threats.
Debt collectors were clearly looking for her.
My daughter was suffering in a hospital, yet he was busy taking his bestie on a vacation to escape her debts.
"She's in debt, isn't she? Why are you going on a trip?"
I stared into his eyes, searching for a hint of guilt.
All I saw was annoyance.
"None of your business!" he snapped.
"Just do what I told you and stop talking!"
I grit my teeth. "You took the money I raised just to pay off her gambling debts?"
"You have the nerve to bring up that money?"
His eyes widened in fury.
"If those thugs weren't breathing down her neck, I wouldn't have had to step in!"
"I'm not done with you for using our daughter's name to scam people!"
He turned to head back inside.
I grabbed his arm, my voice cracking with desperation.
"Hazel really needs that surgery. If you don't believe me, just come to the hospital once..."
Slap!
He swung his hand and hit me again.
The force was so great that I collapsed onto the pavement.
Kade looked down at me with nothing but warning in his eyes.
"Have some dignity, will you? You made our kid pretend to be sick just to trick our relatives?"
"How do you think that makes me look? I work myself to the bone for this family!"
"Now that you've run out of relatives, you're calling my coworkers? Are you trying to get me fired?"
He looked righteous, as if he were the victim here.
"I'm telling you, I won't let your behavior ruin Hazel's future."
"If I find out you're out there begging for money again, I'll kill you myself!"
3.
He glared at me, his eyes bloodshot like a predator looking at an enemy.
I clutched my burning cheek, staring in disbelief at the man I had shared a bed with for years.
"Kade, how can you be this heartless?"
"Have you forgotten that I stayed by your side when you had nothing?"
"Even if you don't care about me, think about our daughter!"
He scoffed, his expression full of disdain.
"You have the balls to bring up the past? Holly was a much better person than you back then."
"I still married you, and what did I get? Constant lies and slander against Holly."
"If you're not going to help with the bags, then get the hell out of here!"
I was panicking.
Hazel was in that hospital bed, waiting for the surgery deposit.
The money Kade had was her only hope.
I swallowed my pride and the crushing bitterness in my chest.
I let my knees hit the ground, kneeling before him.
"Kade, I'm begging you. She really needs the money. Please give it back. I have nowhere else to go..."
Every word I said was the absolute truth.
I had exhausted every contact I had to raise that cash.
I had given up my dignity and was now kneeling before his mistress.
I just wanted to trigger one tiny spark of conscience in him.
But my pleading only made him more disgusted.
His voice dropped to a threatening low.
"If you don't leave right now, don't blame me for what happens next."
"You love cursing our daughter so much, right? You want her to die?"
"Fine. Let her die then!"
"With a shameless mother like you, she wouldn't grow up to be anything good anyway!"
He tried to slam the door, but I lunged forward, jamming my hand in the gap.
The heavy wood crushed my fingers, and I felt the skin tear.
Blood began to leak out, staining the white doorframe.
Despite the blinding pain, I didn't let go.
This was the only chance I had.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
Kade didn't actually want to crush my hand completely, so he just roared in frustration.
"Give me the money!"
I stared at him with wild eyes.
"Give it back, and I promise I'll never bother you again!"
Kade glared at me for a long time before finally admitting the truth.
"The money is gone. I already gave it to Holly's creditors."
He said it so casually, as if he were talking about the weather.
The world started spinning. "All of it? You gave them all of it?"
"It's your fault anyway!"
He immediately flipped the script.
"If you hadn't bullied her and made her depressed, she wouldn't have gone to the casino to take her mind off things!"
"She lost that money because of you. It's your debt, really."
"As your husband, I couldn't just let her be beaten to death by loan sharks. Do you think you'd be off the hook if that happened?"
He dumped the entire weight of the situation on my shoulders.
He acted as if I were the one who forced Holly to gamble and borrow from criminals.
The fire in my heart was extinguished by a wave of cold, heavy sorrow.
I let go of the door.
I watched the blood drip from my fingertips onto the porch.
Kade looked surprised for a moment. When I stopped fighting, his tone softened just a fraction.
"Look, just go home. Once I help Holly move her stuff, I'll come back. Is that enough?"
He paused, then added another blow.
"Holly is really fragile right now. She needs me."
"Instead of wasting time here, go home and teach our daughter some morals."
