I Loved You Once. Never Again

I Loved You Once. Never Again

Are you certain you want to fake your death? The voice on the other end of the phone was cold.

Yes. My answer came without hesitation.

Then I paused.

I have one condition, I added quietly. The one responsible for my death must be Sheldon Carter, my husband.

That is an extreme request, Maam, the man said at last.

Just do what I say. Payment will not be an issue.

I ended the call.

As I lowered my phone, my gaze drifted to the painting on the living room wallthe first one my daughter, Lizzie Carter, had ever made.

She painted three figures holding hands, looking like a loving family.

Yet the longer I stared, the more my breath tightened. The woman in the painting didnt look like me.

She looked like Stacey Middleton, my husbands first love.

My chest constricted painfully.

I thought of our wedding day. Sheldon had been so nervous until his hands trembled, nearly dropping the ring.

Leaning close, he whispered, breathless and earnest, I promise Ill always be with you.

When Lizzie was born, he cried harder than I did.

Holding my shaking body, he kissed my forehead and said hoarsely, One child is enough, I cant watch you suffer again, Reba.

Every anniversary, flowers never failed to arrive. Gifts followed.

Lizzie would throw herself into my arms, laughing, Mommy, I want a family just like you and Daddy when I grow up.

We had been perfect, or so I believed.

Everything changed the day Stacey returned from Englandwith her illegitimate son, Diego Middleton.

She signed a sponsorship contract with Sheldons company, chose Hollywood, and quietly walked back into his life.

Who would have thought that for two entire years, my husband and daughter had been worshipping another woman behind my back?

Sheldon claimed he was busy with meetings. In truth, he was warming someone elses bed.

Lizzie began calling Stacey second mommy, and Diego brother. by saying, It would be so nice if they lived with us.

Each word pierced deeper than betrayal.

I never imagined that my five-year marriageonce envied by allwould become proof of the curse people whispered about behind my back.

So, I made my decision just as quietly.

If loyalty no longer exists, then Ill leave him with guilt, I whispered into the silence, my voice breaking.

I would disappear, faking my death.

Let Sheldon keep the woman he never stopped loving. Let Lizzie grow beside the woman she already adored.

I would leave them the family they wanted, and bury my heartbreak in the grave they believed was mine.

Months after my burial, they learned who truly loved them. And Stacey, she only took advantage of them.

Regret always comes last, and karma is real, Sheldon Carter!

As I turned on the television, an award ceremony filled the screen.

Stacey stood on stage, radiant, smiling as Hollywoods Best Newcomer Actress at the Global Actress Award ceremony.

What shocked me was that she was not alone. She came with my husbandthe man who was supposed to be in a meeting.

Sheldon held Staceys hand. Lizzie and Diego followed arm in arm behind them.

They were smiling like a family meant to be. All because Stacey was under Carter Groups sponsorship.

But tonight was our fifth wedding anniversary. The night that I had prepared carefully.

The dishes, the table, the candle, it was all perfect, except for one. People.

I waited until night swallowed the house and the food turned cold only to receive a cold message, [Urgent business trip. Lizzie with me.]

Nothing else.

In the end, they never came, which made me understand that they had already chosen to forget me without hesitation.

Eyes for eyes, ears for ears.

If they easily left me, then I would leave them also.

Are you certain you want to fake your death? The voice on the other end of the phone was cold.

Yes. I answered without hesitation. But I have one condition. The one responsible for my death must be Sheldon Carter, my husband.

I should leave him with guilt, I added.

That is an extreme request, Maam, the man said at last.

Just do what I say. Payment will not be an issue.

I ended the call and silently lifted the dishes, threw them into the trash. Then I turned the family painting upside down, walked out of the room, and never looked back.

Upstairs, memories trailed behind me like shadows.

Every day, Lizzie used to bring me her little treasuresleaves picked up from the roadside, clumsy crafts from school, colorful stickers she saved carefully just for me. She would press them into my hands as if they were priceless.

Then everything shifted.

I forbade her from eating too many sweets, afraid her tooth decay would worsen. Such a small thing.

Yet from that moment, distance quietly grew. Her smiles faded. Her steps no longer rushed toward me.

As I packed my belongings, the weight of it all finally crushed my chest.

I had met Sheldon eight years agoas his psychiatrist.

Back then, he was struggling with depression. After his father began pushing more responsibilities onto him at the company, his condition worsened.

He even suffered from sociophobia. Before meetings, his entire body would tremble, his hands shaking uncontrollably.

When he first met me, Sheldon was calm, distant, composed. To him, I was just a doctorsomeone meant to fix him.

Three years passed like that.

Then one day, without warning, he proposed.

I cant live without you anymore, he said, eyes red, voice unsteady. I need you by my side.

His family welcomed me warmly. They approved of us, celebrated us. In the end, we got married.

Sheldon often spoke of his dreamto have many children. He loved them deeply.

Children are pure, he once said softly. Not like the adults at the company. They smile at you while stabbing you in the back.

I agreed. I liked children too.

But fate had other plans.

My first pregnancy was high-risk. Giving birth was a battle between life and death. When it was over, the doctor forbade me from ever getting pregnant again.

I saw the disappointment in Sheldons eyes. He tried to hide it, but I saw it.

Still, he held my hand and promised, again and again, No matter what happens, Ill always love you. Your health matters most. We already have Lizzie.

I believed him until two years ago, the day when everything changed as Stacey returned a month after his father passed away.

He began praising her. Sometimes, he praised her son toohow clever he was, how well-behaved.

Lizzie even started saying she wanted siblings.

Until I finally understood, they had already chosen Stacey. And in their hearts, she had quietly replaced me.

So, when morning came, I handed the package to the courier.

Send it to Apartment 1004, I said calmly. The recipient is Stacey Middleton. Make sure it arrives a week from now.

I paused, lips curving faintly. Tell her she may enjoy the pair of husband and daughter. Im throwing out a worthless pair.

What pair are you throwing away? a man's voice asked behind me.

Panic consumed me as I saw Sheldon and Lizzie were already behind me.

The courier accepted the package. I met his eyes briefly, Leave now.

As the door closed, I answered lightly, Nothing. Just decluttering.

Sheldon frowned. You should leave that to the maid. Dont tire yourself.

Im not made of glass, I replied evenly. This wont break me.

He sighed. Always stubborn. Fineleave it to me if you dont trust the maid. Oh, right.

He nudged Lizzie forward.

My daughter held out a flower bouquet she brought.

Mommy mustve felt lonely last night, Lizzie said softly. When we got home, I saw this flower and thought of you. Do you like it, Mom?

Her eyes were full of apologies.

Then Sheldon stepped closer and opened a box.

I didnt mean to miss our anniversary, he said earnestly. It was an urgent business trip.

He held up the diamond ring. This is my apology. If its not enough, say the word. Ill buy you anything.

The diamond caught the light, painfully bright.

I rushed back the moment I was done, he added. Lets reschedule the anniversary next weekon your birthday.

I looked at the flower in Lizzies hand. Then at the ring.

My heart was silent.

How strangehow love always arrived late, carrying apologies instead of presence.

Our wedding had been a week before my birthday.

From Sheldons secretary, I knew he was preparing a new product named after me as a birthday gift.

I was close to her. She liked telling me everything. Sheldon never knew.

That was how I learned the truth, if his meetings and business trips were all lies.

What hurt me so bad was even Lizzie defended him.

Dad is super busy, she once said earnestly. After picking me up from school, he didnt even take me home. He had to bring me out of town.

I studied Sheldons face now. Calm and spotless of guilt.

I smiled gently.

As for rescheduling the anniversaryI didnt care. By next week, we would no longer be a family.

Its fine, I said softly. Thank you for the gift. Lets go inside. Lizzie is freezing.

In the past, I wouldve wrapped Lizzie in warm clothes and hugged Sheldon the moment he came home.

This time, I didnt.

It was only an excuseto change the subject, to stop myself from remembering last nights betrayal.

When we entered the house, both Sheldon and Lizzie froze.

The place was almost empty.

I loved ceramics. Every corner had once held one. Now, the tables were bare.

Most striking of allthe family painting lay turned over on the floor.

Sheldon frowned. Why are the ceramics gone?

Lizzie ran over. And why did you take down my painting, Mom?

Oh, I said casually. I sold the ceramics to a collector. I wanted to declutter and replace them. The painting was worn out too.

Relief flashed across Sheldons face. He thought I knew nothing.

He pinched Lizzies cheek. Dont worry. You can paint a new one, baby. Rememberclear away the old to welcome the new.

Lizzie beamed. Okay! Ill make lots of new ones!

I watched them quietly, mockery settling deep in my eyes.

Welcome the new one, huh?

Did it mean they would clear away the old mother and welcome a new woman?

What a tragic story.

As we walked inside, the smell of food still lingered in the house. Sheldon followed it until he found that the prepared meal lay discarded in the trash bin.

Did you cook dinner last night? he asked in curiosity.

Oh, I replied lightly. Its been a while since I cooked. It tasted awful, so I threw it away.

He frowned. Youre tiring yourself again. You couldve asked the chef to cook for us. Dont do this anymore, alright?

He reached out and patted my head, the gesture gentle and distant.

Lizzie ran over and hugged my waist. Yes, Mom. Your health matters most. I want Mommy to see me get married someday.

My heart tightened, but my smile didnt falter.

Alright, I said softly. Go take a bath. You both stink so much I might throw up.

I brushed them off and walked into the bedroom.

The moment the door closed, my phone vibrated.

A message from Stacey.

I opened it.

A photo of the four of them together smiling beneath the same flower bouquet Lizzie had just given me.

Another photo, taken at my favorite restaurant.

And the last one was an opened diamond set, the one I was clearly familiar with.

Then came another message from Stacey, [There are two rings in the set, so I gave one to you. I assume Sheldon made it as your anniversary gift, right?]

The words pierced my chest.

So everything Sheldon and Lizzie gave me was never meant to be mine alone. It was Staceys excess.

I stared at the screen, fingers trembling. Had I really been foolish enough to believe I was treasured?

I thought his love was genuine, I never knew that Sheldon already had a first love back in high school. A girl he could never forget.

A girl who left after graduation and came back years later to destroy everything I believed in.

From the very beginning, my place had never been the first.

I lowered my phone and laughed soundlessly while packing my things.

In the evening, the door opened, Sheldon and Lizzie insisted on sleeping beside me.

The anniversary isnt about the date, Sheldon said gently. Its about celebrating. Dont overthink it, okay?

Lizzie hugged my arm tightly. We celebrate every year anyway. Mommy, dont be sad about last night. Today, Lizzie will sleep with Mommy and Daddy.

I didnt answer. I was afraid that if I spoke, I would cry.

Soon, Lizzies breathing softened in my arms. But I remained awake.

Then Sheldons phone vibrated. A message from Stacey. [Come, Diego has been sleeping.]

Later, a photo filled the screen, it was Stacey in red lingerie. [I prepared this just for you.]

My fingers clenched beneath the blanket.

As Sheldon glanced to the side, I pretended to be asleep, closing my eyes.

Perhaps because there was no reply, a video call came through.

Staceys face appeared, lips curved in a teasing smile. Slowly, deliberately, she began untying the lingerie.

As an actress, she was really great at making expressions, even her gestures were so intoxicating.

Sheldon swallowed hard.

He rose from the bed, movements careful, silentas if no one would notice.

But as he reached for the door, I asked quietly, Where are you going?

He froze for half a second. Then smiled.

Urgent meeting, he said softly. Ill be right back.

He returned, kissed my forehead and left.

The door closed and something inside me died without a sound.

But the door closed too hard, so Lizzie stirred, half-awake, mumbling, Ah Dad snuck out to meet my second mommy again. Next time, Ill follow him and play with Diego too.

I froze. What did you say, darling?

She realized her mistake instantly and hugged me tight.

I meanDaddy went to work again, late at night, she said quickly. Leaving you alone. But its okay, Mom. Im here. You wont be lonely.

I didnt hug her back, only pulled the blanket higher and turned away.

Moments later, from outside, the roar of Sheldons car engine cut through the night.

He was speeding.

Sheldon never came back that night. Nor the next morning.

At breakfast, I sat alone at the table. My phones chimed.

[Ive instructed Judy to prepare warming chicken broth for you. Make sure to drink it. Let her take Lizzie to school. You should rest more and avoid tiring yourself.]

Every detail was arranged. The perfect image of a caring husband.

But that care only felt like salt rubbed into an open wound. Since I knew better, this care was nothing but guilt.

Every time Sheldon cheated, he buried me in attentionas if flowers and gentle words could erase the scent of another woman from his skin.

Those late-night messages always arrived at strange hours. Perhaps sent right after he finished with herwhile buttoning his shirt, straightening his collar, and pretending to still be my husband.

I had not had time to close the message as the new email came.

Inside, attached a DNA Test file from the hospital.

My vision blurred as the document opened on my screen, [Diego Middleton is 99% compatible with Sheldon Carter.]

My hand trembled as a voice note followed. Im pregnant too. You lose this time. I can give Sheldon two children now. And Ill have more if he wants.

Before I could breathe, another line appeared. Oh, I almost forgot. Even your daughter seems to love me more than you. Reba, what do you have left?

The phone slipped from my fingers and suddenly I heard Lizzie laughing, as if laughing at my suffering.

So I descended the staircase and stopped as I saw her sit before the TV, stuffing her mouth with sweets I was never allowed to touch.

Only a few days had passed, yet her cheeks were already puffed from sugar.

When Lizzie saw me, she panicked, hiding the cream-filled pastry behind her back. Guilt was written all over her small face.

But I didnt scold her.

Instead, I knelt down until they were eye to eye, studying the child who carried half of Sheldons blood.

If your father and I separate, I asked quietly, would you be okay with Stacey raising you instead?

Lizzie didnt even process the first part. Her eyes lit up.

Really? she asked excitedly. If Stacey comes to live with me, I will be happier if she brings Diego around, so that I can play more with him!

My heart didnt sink. It went numb on that innocents answer.

Of course, the child took after her father.

Seeing me about to leave, Lizzie hurried over and grabbed my hand instinctively. Mommy, when will you take me to school? Ill be late.

I pulled her hand away, voice flat. Judy will take you. Im tired.

I want you, Mommy. Lizzies eyes widened, pleading. Please.

No, I said coldly. Im tired.

I wont be taking you to your full week courses anymore. From now on, you are free to do everything you want.

Lizzie froze.

Confusion and hurt flickered across her face.

I had never said coldly to her before. She bit her lip, forcing back tears.

Judy sensed the tension and quietly ushered Lizzie out of the house.

I didnt stop them.

I couldnt. Not today.

In the afternoon, I went straight to the city center.

Once you sign, theres no turning back, the agent said. Five days from now, Reba Carter will cease to exist.

I nodded.

My hand didnt shake as I signed my name.

Then I removed the infinity bracelet from my wristthe one thing I had never taken off.

If Im going to die, I murmured, make it convincing.

That bracelet meant everything.

After Lizzie's birth, I had fallen into a coma. As soon as I woke up, he put me on a bracelet with an infinity charm as a wish that I would live longer with him.

His devotion had moved me so deeply that I vowed never to remove the bracelet. Not even in death.

And now, I was keeping that promise in the cruelest way possible.

As I walked out, whispers drifted from the front desk.

They say Mr. Sheldon treats his wife like shes his whole world. Yet she just signed up for a fake death service.

So even the most beautiful marriages rot behind closed doors.

I used to root for their love story. Turns out it was all a lie.

I didnt stay to hear more.

Maybe Sheldon had loved me onceduring those five years. But his love always burned too fast and died even faster.

Needing a distraction, I went to the mall.

To my surprise, I saw Lizzie and Diegowho should have been in schoolplaying in the playground inside the mall.

Not far from the scene, there were Sheldon and Stacey arms in arms and smiling at the kids. They looked like a perfect family.

For a moment, the world blurred.

Just like Sheldon wanted, having lots of kids and playing with them, enjoying time together. Something I could never give him.

Perhaps because I'd been standing there too long, Stacey noticed me.

Reba? Stacey gasped, covering her mouth as she clicked over in high heels. Why are you here?

Her face showed perfect surpriseno guilt at all.

Please dont misunderstand, she said gently. Diego wanted to play on the playground but was too scared to be alone, so I took Lizzie with me.

But Sheldon thought Id be overwhelmed taking care of them alone, so he came to help me.

If youre upset, blame me. Its my fault. Sheldon and Lizzie are completely innocent.

Stacey played the fragile maiden flawlesslysoft eyes, trembling voice.

Yet as she leaned closer, tilted her collar just enough. Faint bite marks peeked out.

She made sure I could see them clearly.

Thats fine, Sheldon muttered, rubbing his temples. Irritation crept into his voice. Reba is not the type to indulge petty jealousy.

Then he talked to me, I also have an event to attend here, I intend to invite you and Lizzie to come together.

Stacey shocked to hear that and cut off, But you said we

Before she could finish, Sheldons voice dropped, cold and sharp. Stacey, go pick Diego or you will be late to come to the event.

I stood there quietly.

Stacey shot me a concealed glare before picking up Diegoreluctance etched into every step.

As Diego and Lizzie waved goodbye, Lizzie bounced to my side, clinging to my arm.

Mom, please dont be upset with the second I mean, Auntie Stacey. Im so happy to play with Diego, too.

Last night, when she was dreaming, she called her second mommy. It seemed she was used to calling Stacey that.

Im not upset, I replied calmly. Its just unexpected to run into the four of you here.

My tone turned distant. If theres nothing else, Ill head back to the house.

Reba, are you not hearing what I said before? Sheldon said softly. Theres a charity event here, come with me.

I didnt answer. But he thought my silence meant that I agreed.

He slipped an arm around my waist without hesitation.

Youve gotten fuller, he murmured absentmindedly, then corrected himself, Thats good. You used to be too thin. No matter how you look, I love you all the same.

A cold, faint smile touched my lips.

After all, my body hadnt changed in years. The comment came only because his hands had grown used to Staceys narrow waist.

That afternoon, he brought me to a high-end store, asked me to pick whatever I wanted.

But at checkout, I sent everything to Stacey.

Why dont you just take it? I asked quietly.

We didnt bring bodyguards, he replied. Your arms will be full carrying the bags.

Then at least pick one outfit for tonight, he added. Well go to the salon after. Should I choose one for you?

In the end, I wore the dress Sheldon chose. The makeup Sheldon chose.

When I stepped out, I barely recognized herself. I looked like a second Stacey.

Lizzie clapped happily. Mom, youre so beautiful!

I turned toward the malls giant screen.

Stacey appeared on it, wearing the same red dress.

Red was Staceys favorite color. The one Sheldon always chose.

In the past, I would have confronted himdemanded answers, threatened separation within the relationship.

But now I couldnt afford mistakes.

With less than one week left, I let him do as he pleased.

At the event, I wasnt surprised to see Stacey againwearing the same color dress as mine.

This time, she stood on stage as the host. Her words were sharp and charming, her laughter drawing applause from the entire hall.

When she stepped down, she walked straight toward us.

She deliberately took the seat beside Sheldon. With practiced intimacy, she pinched Lizzies cheek and waved for her assistant. Soon, Diego was placed beside Lizzie.

In the end, I sat trapped between them.

Lizzie and Diego played happily, while Sheldon and Stacey chatted animatedly, voices low, smiles familiar.

Stacey kept provoking me with glances and small gestures. I gave her nothing. I simply sat still, quiet and detached.

Until the final item appeared. A familiar blue pendant.

It was my familys, something that passed down through generations. I had given it to Sheldon on our wedding day.

Sheldon promised to pass it to our daughter one day, for her to give to her husband. But two years ago, he said it was lost.

My fingers trembled as I reached for the bidding card, but someone had called first, Five thousand dollars.

Stacey pouted theatrically. I want it so badly. Its perfect for Diego. His birthday is coming up. She sighed. But its too expensive for just a pendant.

Diego tugged her hand. Its okay, Mom. As long as youre there, thats enough.

Sheldon smiled.

Ill buy it for you, he said casually. A gift for Diego.

Ten thousand dollars.

My chest tightened.

How could he bid it easily for others when he knew how precious it was for me?

Could it be he already forgot about it?

Or perhapshe had never taken anything of mine seriously to begin with.

In frustration, I bid higher, Twenty thousand dollars.

Staceys face darkened. Displeasure flickered across Sheldons eyes at her recklessness.

Yet Stacey quickly masked it with sweetness.

Reba, she said lightly, You live such a blessed life now. Sheldon and Lizzie adore you endlessly. You wouldnt mind letting me have this pendant, would you?

Lizzie tugged at her cloak. Mom why dont we let second Auntie Stacey took it? We already have so many treasures at the Manor.

My lips curved into a strained smile. What if this is the only one your first mother refuses to yield?

I deliberately emphasized the word first, making Lizzie a little scared.

After all, I had never cared for blessed adornments. But this time, I would not retreat.

Sheldon squeezed Staceys hand reassuringly, then flicked Lizzies forehead gently. Thats enough.

In this family, Sheldon said coldly, we honor what your mother wants. How could you even suggest giving away something she desires?

Staceys smile shattered. She stood abruptly and left the auction hall, heels striking the floor in sharp, furious beats.

Sheldon exhaled deeply and rose, clearly tempted to follow.

Before leaving, he bent and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

Ill collect the pendant, he said gently, Take care of Lizzie and Diego for me.

I was about to follow him, but Lizzie tugged at my dress, saying she needed me.

For years, Sheldon had used Lizzie as his shield, a perfect excuse to slip away unnoticed, indulging forbidden desires under the cover of night.

But a child was still a child. I saw through it easily.

Feigning the need for fresh air, I said, You stay here with Diego.

Lizzie sensed my mood and didnt stop me.

I followed Sheldons scent through the corridors. It led me to a secluded washroom hall.

Stacey stood there, crying into Sheldons chest.

Hidden behind a door, every word reached me clearly.

If I hadnt moved away during school, Stacey sobbed, we wouldve gone to college together. You wouldve married me. Its all your faultfor marrying that doctor!

She cried for a long time.

Sheldon didnt interrupt. Not once.

When her sobs finally softened, he chuckled quietly.

Look at you, he murmured. Crying like a newborn baby. What a mess.

His teasing only fueled her resentment.

I dont care! Stacey snapped, fists clenched. Your wife took the treasure I wanted. You owe me tonight!

The air between them shiftedtight, dangerous, charged with unspoken hunger.

Sheldons voice dropped, rough and low.

You said it yourself, he warned. Dont beg me to stop later.

That night, behind closed doors, the man chose desire over loyaltyand the sound of my heart breaking was far louder than any cry Stacey made.

What I didnt witness came moments later.

Staceys voice trembled. Do you love me?

Sheldon didnt hesitate. Lust still clouded his gaze. If I didnt, why would I keep you by my side?

Encouraged, Stacey pressed closer, voice coy. If you had to chooseme, or that woman who would it be?

Obviously you.

The word struck like a blade.

Then divorce her for me.

A pause fell between them.

You know I cant, he said coolly. My family will only hand over the company if I stay with her. Its written in my fathers will.

He sighed, almost impatient. You know my situation. Reba is the one who changed me into who I am today. Thats why my parents insisted I marry her.

My breath stopped. I covered my mouth, disbelief crashing over me.

So that was it.

All those years, every vow and carefully crafted affection was only a payment for inheritance. For wealth that only came as long as he stayed married to me.

It was too cruel.

Too cruel, Sheldon Carter!

And as if that truth hadnt already torn me apart, he reached out and brushed Staceys cheek, coaxing, Hey, I barely touch her anymore. Isnt that proof of how much you mean to me?

Fine.

But Stacey wasnt satisfied. She wanted more than affection.

She wanted the titleMrs., not mistress.

Tears streamed down her face.

Since Lizzies birth, my intimacy with Sheldon had faded into almost nothing.

I once believed he was protecting my fragile body after childbirth.

Now I understood.

He had already satisfied his lust elsewhereand no longer needed to pretend with me.

I left, coming back to the auction hall.

Just as I entered, my phone vibrated. Another message from Stacey.

A photo appearedthe two of them naked in the bathroom. Then the words followed. [Guess what your husband just did? Its only a pendant. Take it if you want. His heart and everything else belongs to me now.]

I didnt block Stacey. Not yet.

Stacey still had a role to play.

Not long after, Sheldon handed me the pendant. Ive paid for it, I hope youll treasure it.

I brought it also. He gave milk for Lizzie and Diego.

Thanks, Dad, both of them thanked him as if they were siblings.

Sheldon was a little surprised, but seeing that I didn't react, only focused on my treasure, he didn't confirm anything and simply stroked the two children's heads.

After all, it was true that Diego was his son. There was nothing more I needed to compromise on.

I brushed the pendant.

Once, I believed this marriage would last ever after. But now I knew, not all men were devoted to one woman for life, most were like Sheldon.

Perhaps my heart had finally exceeded its limit.

The moment we returned to the Manor, I collapsed with a raging fever.

Heat scorched my skin through the night.

Sheldon panicked, scooped me into his arms, and rushed me to the hospital.

When I woke, a nurse stood by my bed, handing me a cup of water.

She said with relief, Finally youre awake. Youve burned with fever for three days and nights. Mr. Sheldon and your daughter never left your side.

I sighed softly.

I dont know what weighs on your heart. If I had a husband and child guarding me like this, I would be glowing with joy.

After urging me to let go of my worries, she quietly left.

Not long after, Stacey entered.

She smiled gently and placed a hand on her abdomen. "I've just checked my pregnancy, and the doctor said it's twins. Perhaps I can finally grant Sheldon's wish as soon as possible."

"Imagine how happy Sheldon would be to be surrounded by the many children he desires, and that will only happen if he's with me."

"So, be considerate, Reba."

I reached for my bag and pulled out the divorce papers, handing them to her.

Then make him sign this, I said calmly. I will be glad if you submit it to the court too for me. If you succeed, your wish will come true.

Her eyes widened. Are you serious?

I nodded.

At least this way, everything would finally be simple.

Just as Stacey reached for the papers, I pulled them back.

One more condition, I said quietly. My birthday is tomorrow, and I know you must be aware of what Sheldon has prepared for me that night.

If you can lure him away from me tomorrow night, Ill leave from your sight forever.

Stacey blinked. Are you serious? You wont tell Sheldon?

I dont lie, I replied. And I meant it.

This wouldnt be a simple divorce. It would be my disappearance from his worldforever.

Okay.

Not long after, Sheldon and Lizzie returned from their meal.

What are you doing here? Sheldon asked.

"Oh, I'm doing a health check-up here, then..." Stacey smiled calmly. I heard Reba was awake after her health check, so I came to visit.

She added softly, I also need your signature as a sponsor to claim insurance.

Sheldon saw the pregnancy book in Staceys hand and panicked at once, signing without hesitation before turning to me. Are you feeling better?

Stacey smiled, satisfied, and left straight for the court.

I hadnt expected it to be so easy.

After Stacey was gone, the room grew quiet.

Sheldon reached out to brush a loose strand of hair from my forehead, I lifted my hand and lightly touched his wrist.

Just barely, but enough.

Im sweaty, I murmured, eyes lowered. I feel unpleasant.

He froze, startledthen softened.

He gathered my cool hands in his.

How could you ever be unpleasant? he said gently. You always carry the scent I love. I could never grow tired of you.

He kissed my hand.

Lizzie squealed, covering her eyes. Ewww, so mushy!

Then I wriggled closer, wrapping my arms around me. Then Ill keep Mommy warm too!

Beyond the glass wall, people passing by slowed their steps.

They saw a flawless picture. A gentleman husband, a lovely wife, and a bright, laughing child.

Eyes filled with envy.

No one knew this perfect family was already breaking apart.

But the illusion shattered the moment Sheldons phone chimed.

He glanced at it.

I caught the contact name before the screen dimmed, My Darling.

A sharp silence fell between us.

Sheldon stood at once, smoothing his face into practiced calm.

Urgent meeting, he said evenly. Ill bring back your favorite pastries.

He ruffled Lizzies hair. Be a strong girl. Protect Mommy.

I want to go with Daddy! Lizzie whined, reaching for him.

Sheldon hesitated, torn for a brief second. Maybe I should bring her

Go, I cut in, my voice calm, almost gentle. Take her. Itll be easier for me.

He blinked, surprised, but didnt argue. He lifted Lizzie into his arms and left.

He didnt return until nightfall. No pastries. No gifts.

Only voice callfrom Stacey. [Ive submitted everything to the court and will ask them out tomorrow night. Youll do as promised, right?]

A photo followed, the four of them at dinner, smiling beside a pregnancy test.

Then a video. Lizzie laughed brightly at the camera. Diego and I will have other siblings, I love my second mommy the most!

The clip ended.

My hands didnt shake.

I felt nothing.

The next day, I packed my things and took a taxi to Sheldons parents home.

I remembered the first time I met themhow anxious they were, how tightly Sheldons mother clutched her husbands hand.

Sheldons condition had terrified them. His depression, his fear of people, and his trembling before every meeting.

Back then, his father had sighed heavily.

If this continues, he said bitterly, Ill have no choice but to hand the company to my nephew.

He was helpless.

But under my treatment, Sheldon slowly recovered. His parents looked at me as if I were a miracle.

His mother had gripped my hands, eyes reddened. Thank you.

His father said hoarsely. You didnt just heal my son. You saved my family.

From then on, they treated me like their own daughter.

They often joked about Sheldon and me.

She listens, he calms down, his father laughed once. Perfect compatibility.

His mother nodded eagerly. If you dont marry her, youll never find anyone better.

When they found out Sheldon proposed to me, they were overjoyed.

His father even drank more than he should have at the celebration, smiling like a relieved man who had finally escaped his worst fear.

Sadly, he died two years ago in a plane crash while on a business trip.

But at least I owe her mother a farewell.

However, when I arrived, my steps faltered. Sheldons car was parked outside.

Through the window, I saw Stacey in the living room.

Laughter spilled outexcited, intimate, unmistakably warm.

I stood there, listening.

And understood, I was already the only one missing from their family.

Mommy, relax, a womans voice chimed brightly. Ill give the Carter bloodline many kids within three years. I wont let this lineage end with me.

His mother laughed, delighted. Good girl. Thats all these old people will for. I long to see this house lively again.

Then her tone softened with pity.

As for Reba, shes kind-hearted, but damaging her core while birthing Lizzie was such a tragedy. Thankfully, we still have you. If you carry this child to term, youll be the Carter familys savior.

The gift bag in my hands suddenly burned.

Inside were the farewell presents I had chosen with care.

Now, all of it felt pointless.

Quietly, I handed the gifts to the housekeeper nearby, swallowing the ache rising in my throat.

I still remembered the night after my wedding ceremony, Sheldons mother had clasped my hands tightly. If Sheldon ever strays, come to me. Ill tear his ears off myself.

No matter what happens, youll always be the daughter in law I acknowledge.

Yet today, I heard her welcoming another woman with genuine warmth.

Sheldon was their blood. I was, at best, a girl who came into their family, an outsider.

I left, took a taxi, and headed straight for the airport.

As the plane prepared for take-off, my phone chimed.

A message from Sheldon. [Dont forget tonights agenda. Well celebrate your birthday and our anniversary.]

A link followed. The venue and the time.

Sheldons secretary once told me the product would be launched tonight and the brand ambassador was Stacey.

I remembered the first time I saw something strange with Sheldon on our fourth anniversary.

What happened to your neck? I asked casually, pointing at the crimson marks along his skin. Looks like something bit you.

He stiffened.

The marks still carried the red of a recent heatclearly left by another womans lips.

Sheldon cleared his throat, Adams apple bobbing.

Probably night-sting insects, he said weakly. You dont think Id stray, do you? You know youre the only woman Ive ever loved.

Is that so? I replied.

It was a deep winter. Even insects were buried beneath frozen snow.

I didnt wait for his excuses. I brushed past him and entered the washroom.

He stood there, frozen, his face drained of color.

Moments later, perhaps driven by guilt, he followed me and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind.

The mirror reflected us clearlymy distance, his conflict.

He sighed softly. Can you believe it? Four years of marriage. It feels like a blink. And there are so many seasons ahead of us.

In my mind, a quiet answer surfaced. Too bad there wont be another year for us.

Almost at once, Staceys phone call came through. Hello, Reba. Are you leaving already?

I steadied my breathing before answering, Dont worry, you will get what you want.

She smiled. Good, since tonight will be remarkable for us.

After hanging up the call, I called the organization handling my staged death.

Sheldon will go to the event tonight with Stacey, I said calmly. Prepare the stage near her apartment.

I paused, voice steady as ice. Make it convincing.

The call ended.

I removed the SIM card, snapped it in half, and discarded it.

As airplane mode on, I whispered to myself, From today on, there will be no Reba Barrett anymore.

Its already evening. We should go, Sheldon stood up first.

If his secretary hadnt reminded him of his schedule, he might have forgotten what day it was entirely.

Stacey glanced at him from the corner of her eye, calculating, pleased. She was thinking about how to keep him focus on her tonightjust as she had promised yesterday in the hospital.

Sheldons mother smiled warmly. I hope Lizzie and Diego can visit Grandma again soon. I love having a house full of children.

Sure, Mom, Stacey replied sweetly. Ill bring them over sometimes.

Sheldons mother reached for Staceys hand, her voice gentle. Im so happy to have you and Diego in our family. Take good care of yourself during the pregnancy. Ask me anything if you need advice.

I will, Mom, Stacey answered softly.

On the way back to Staceys apartment, Lizzie and Diego fell asleep from exhaustion, heads tilted toward each other.

The car grew quiet.

That was when Stacey spoke.

Honey, she said lightly, eyes fixed on the road ahead, youll do to me what you did to Reba someday too, right?

Sheldon chuckled. His hand slid onto her thighdeliberately exposed, deliberately inviting.

Are you jealous? he asked lazily. After everything Ive done for you?

Stacey pouted. She has her name on your brand. But me? She sighed. Im just your brand ambassador. Nothing more.

He squeezed her thigh. Then how about this, he said casually. For your next birthday, Ill buy you a building. Name it after you.

She turned to him, eyes lighting up. You promise?

He nodded.

Then seal it, Stacey said, leaning closer.

Sheldon kissed her without hesitation.

They finally reached the apartment lobby.

Sheldon loosened her seatbelt. Come upstairs and prepare for tonights event. I should go home and

Stacey already knew what he was about to say.

She pressed a hand to her forehead and swayed slightly. Honey I feel dizzy. Her voice softened. These pregnancy hormonesI dont think I can manage alone tonight.

She leaned into him, fragile and dependent. Will you stay with me today?

Worry flickered across Sheldons face. In the end, he gave in.

He sent me a message, brief and carelesstelling me to attend the event alone. The driver would pick me up.

Lizzie didnt come home either. She stayed at Staceys apartment, sleeping beside Diego.

Tonights event was massive. Reporters swarmed for the launch of Carter Groups newest product. Every detail had to be flawlessespecially Stacey, the brand ambassador.

All preparations were done at Staceys apartment.

Stylists came and went. Makeup artists hovered. Dresses, jewelry, shoeseach chosen with Sheldons personal approval. He spared no expense, indulging her every preference.

By the time everything was ready, night had already fallen.

They left together.

Sheldon felt a trace of exhaustion, but the driver had been sent for me. So he drove alone.

Staceys preparations had taken far longer than planned. She kept asking for breaks, blaming discomfort, blaming hormones. In the end, they departed only minutes before the event was set to begin.

His phone rang againhis secretary, urgency sharp in her voice.

Not wanting to make a poor impression before partners and the public, Sheldon pressed harder on the accelerator.

The car sped through the night.

But trouble followed them into the car.

Lizzie and Diego began fighting over a toy. Their voices rose, sharp and relentless.

Stacey couldnt stay quiet either. She complained nonstop, pressing a hand to her stomach, muttering about how unbearable the twins wereeven before they were born.

The noise filled the car, heavy and chaotic.

It distracted Sheldon as he drove.

For a fleeting moment, he thought of me.

If it were Reba, this wouldnt have happened.

I always prepared Lizzie carefully for events like this. For a four-year-old, a long night event meant exhaustion and tears. So I made sure she slept during the day.

Before leaving, I fed her her favorite meal and snacks. A full stomach kept her calm, kept her smiling.

I never gave Lizzie overstimulating toys. No loud sounds. No flashing lights.

I chose activity books and educational tabletsthings that helped her emotions, her coordination.

That was why Sheldon once wanted many children with me. Because I knew how to care.

But fate was cruel. I could only give him Lizziefor my entire life.

Then another thought crossed his mind.

Thats fine, he reassured himself. When Staceys child is born, Reba will help take care of them. She loves children. She definitely will.

Too bad, Sheldon.

By the time that thought formed, I had already left you and Lizzie behind.

His drifting mind was dragged back by the noise. Lizzie and Diego were still arguing. Stacey clutched her head, complaining about the screaming, her voice sharp, impatient.

Instead of calming the children, she joined the tantrum, her tone no calmer than theirs.

Finally, Sheldon snapped.

Shut up, both of you! he shouted, turning around to glare at the backseat.

He kept lecturing them, his attention fixed behind him until Stacey screamed, Sheldon, brake!

Too late.

The car ahead was too close to them.

Bang!

Stacey sat frozen, shock hollowing her chest as she watched the car they had hit lose control.

It spun wildly, slammed into the road divider, then plunged into the ravinedisappearing into the darkness.

Shit! Sheldon roared, his voice exploding inside the car. Can you all shut up and stop distracting me while Im driving? Why are you all so annoying?

His grip tightened on the wheel. Were already late. Theres still so much to deal with. So shut up!

Lizzie and Diego fell silent at once. Fear sealed their lips.

They had never seen their father lose his temper like that. In their world, their parents had always loved them endlesslyenough to give them whatever they wanted.

Lizzie liked going with Sheldon to see Stacey. With him, rules disappeared. She could eat anything, stay up late, and do as she pleased.

I was the one she feared most. With Daddy, she felt she always had the upper hand.

Diego, on the other hand, had never learned fear at all. Stacey spoiled him without restraint. As long as he followed her instructions, everything he wanted was handed to him.

From attending courses before he could even form full sentences, to doing exercises far beyond his age, Diego obeyedbecause obedience was rewarded.

Neither child understood right or wrong. They only knew benefits and losses. That was the adults failureteaching them desire, but never consequences.

They didnt know that people could make mistakes. That sometimes, being wrong was allowed.

So at that moment, when Sheldon shouted, they believed something terrifying.

That their father might no longer love them.

And if love disappeared, so would their privileges.

Their world felt like it was collapsing.

Too afraid to cry aloud, they stayed frozen in their seats, shoulders trembling, tears silently spilling as they clutched their hands together in the dark.

While Staceys voice trembled despite herself. Sheldon where did that car go? The words spilled out before she could stop them. Did it fall into the ravine?

Shut up, Sheldon snapped. And dont tell anyone.

His eyes were cold. You were involved too. As long as you keep quiet, this wont come out. Do you understand?

He slammed his foot down on the accelerator and fled the scene.

It was nearly midnight. He couldnt afford delays over something so trivialor so he thought.

After all, it was just an accident. And accidents could be settled with money.

He had always believed that. As long as he had money, everything could be handled easily, that was what he learned since childhood.

Sometimes, family tradition was something too terrifying to understand by some people.

But that was how he was raised.

Still, through the rear window, Stacey caught a glimpse of redbright, violentflickering in the distance, as if the car were burning.

Her heart dropped.

This wasnt just a crash. This was death.

And she was part of it.

Stacey shut her eyes tightly, forcing her breathing to steady.

As long as I say nothing, she told herself, everything will be fine.

Behind Stacey, Lizzie and Diego could only sob in silence. They didnt dare cry aloud. Sheldons earlier roar still echoed in their ears.

At an intersection, the car stopped at a red light.

Sheldon picked up his phone and called his secretary. I hit someone by accident, he said flatly. Handle it for me. Ill be at the event soon. Make sure no one finds out.

Then the light turned green. He drove on.

He never asked who he hit. Never cared what happened next.

Watching from afar, the agent I hired shook his head slowly. Even he hadnt imagined someone could be this indifferent.

Minutes later, sirens pierced the night.

Police cars arrived. Firefighters. An ambulance.

Another car stopped nearby. A woman stepped out, heels clicking against the road. Sheldons secretary.

She had come thinking it was just a minor accident. But when she saw the wreckagetwisted metal, scorched ground, the smell of burningher steps faltered.

What actually happened here? she thought.

After the flames were extinguished, the victim was pulled from the car and rushed into the ambulance. The body was covered in severe burns, skin charred, unrecognizable.

Even the secretary frowned.

Find out who the victim is, she ordered quietly. And make sure no one knows about this. Understood?

Yes, maam.

As usual, she sent me a report by text. [Ma'am, something happened to Mr. Carter. He appears to have been involved in a serious accident. I will also let you know once the victim has been identified.]

There was no reply.

Assuming I was busy, she left the scene quickly. Tonight was too important for Carter Group. No one had time to linger.

When Sheldon finally arrived at the event, lights flashing and cameras waiting. Some people wondered why he came, once again, with Stacey and Diego.

The three people who used to attend every event together suddenly disappeared, replaced by four.

The public began to suspect that something they didn't know was going on, but they couldn't find any evidence.

An event staff hurried over. Mr. Carter, we are glad you finally arrived.

Sheldon nodded. Then he asked calmly, Do you know where Reba is? I should meet her first.

They looked at each other as if confused. After all, they thought I would come together with Sheldon and Lizzie.

But they came with Stacey and Diego instead.

One of them said hesitantly, Mrs. Carter hasnt arrived yet, Sir.

He was shocked and immediately checked his phone.

The message he sent earlier that afternoon was theredelivered. He had even sent the location and thought everything was clear.

A flicker of irritation rose. Is she upset because I didnt come with her?

Sheldon called the driver.

Why isnt Reba here yet? he asked coldly. Did something happen on the road?

The driver sounded confused. Sir, Mrs. Carter said she would drive herself to the event.

Alone? Sheldon snapped. How dare you let her drive alone!

He was already on edge. Anything that strayed from his expectations only worsened his temper.

He hung up without letting the driver explain and dialed my number.

No answer.

He tried again. And again.

Ten times.

Each call ended the same way, the mechanical voice repeating without emotion, The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please call later.

Where are you, Reba?

Sheldon scrolled through his phone, his fingers stiff. None of my messages had been answered.

I hadnt replied to him. I hadnt told him about my day. For the past few days, our conversations had shrunk to almost nothing.

In the past, I had always checked in first.

[Did you eat?]

[Dont overwork yourself.]

[Take a break if you feel dizzy.]

I steadied his moods, soothed his anxiety, and listened to his fears. Our weekly talks were never casualthey were quiet counseling sessions I gave freely, just to keep him whole.

But over the last two years, those conversations thinned. Then vanished.

Sheldon never noticed. He was too busy playing with a new toy to realize the old one was already breaking.

Only now did he see it clearly. He was the only one still sending messages. And even then, every text was the same.

[Busy. Cant come home. Urgent meeting.]

Nothing about me. Nothing for me.

A sharp panic crawled up his spine.

He called again. No answer.

Again and again, until the same cold voice repeated, The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.

As time dragged on, questions rose among the guests. Sheldon, restless and irritated, had no choice but to accept the event teams persuasion.

He knew the event could no longer be delayed. So, he steadied his mood and thought, thinking if maybe I forgot to charge my phone, that I would come in the end.

Yes, Sheldon knew how much I loved him. How much I adored and respected him.

The opening should begin first. They will stall for time before the main segment, understand?

Yes, Sir.

Stacey watched from the side and smiled faintly. So, she had kept her promise.

When she returned to her apartment earlier, a package was waiting at the door. She carried it into her room and opened it slowly.

Inside were Sheldons belongings. And Lizzies.

Neatly packed. Cleanly cut.

It was clearI had given up the title of Mrs. Carter. I had abandoned everything connected to that identity, just as I said I would.

In a few days, once the court finalized it, the divorce would be official. All that would remain was choosing a wedding date between her and Sheldon.

Stacey closed the box and laughed softly.

How I love being the winner of this game, she murmured.

Just then, the event team called her name.

She lifted her chin, adjusted her smile, and walked onto the stageradiant, confident, and triumphantas the event began under brilliant lights.

Meanwhile, Sheldon kept checking his watch. It was already past midnight.

I still hadnt arrived.

He began to sense the shift in the roomthe searching glances, the whispered questions. The public was looking for me.

Tonight, only Lizzie and he were present, and the absence was too obvious to ignore.

Two years ago, after his father died in that private plane crash, every responsibility of Carters Group had fallen squarely on his shoulders. The weight had never truly eased.

If anything, it grew heavier.

The business world was ruthless, and he had been forced to harden himself to survive it.

The board of directors pushed him relentlesslyhigher sales, fiercer strategies, results that surpassed even his late fathers legacy.

He knew what they whispered behind his back.

That Sheldon Carter wasnt ready.

That the man who once trembled uncontrollably eight years ago had no right leading an empire.

Those memories still burned.

That was why Staceys arrival had felt perfect.

A distraction. A weapon. A solution.

Making Stacey the brand ambassador had driven sales up at an explosive rate. Numbers spoke louder than doubt. For the first time, he silenced those who questioned him.

He had proven himself. Or so he believed.

The success fed his pride, hardened his arrogance, and left no room for loss. He could not tolerate failurecould not endure anything slipping beyond his control.

So now, with one thing out of place, one person missing, his thoughts unraveledslowly, dangerouslyunder the bright lights of the stage.

After all, Sheldon had prepared everything for my birthday celebrationto impress the public, to paint the picture of the happiest family, to prove he was a loyal and devoted husband.

When he was still feeling overwhelmed with his own thoughts, the event team approached him. Mr. Carter, its time for your opening speech.

Let me know the moment Reba arrives, he said, straightening his suit.

Then he stepped onto the stage.

Under the dazzling lights, Sheldon smiled calmly, confidentlylike a man with nothing to hide.

Good evening, everyone, he began. Thank you for being here tonight, not only for the launch of Carter Groups newest product, but also for a very special celebration.

He paused, eyes sweeping across the crowd.

Two years ago, Carter Group went through its most difficult transition. I went through mine as well. Many people doubted whether I could stand where my father once stood. Some believed I would fail.

A low murmur rippled through the room.

But I didnt, he said firmly. Because behind every decision I made, behind every night I pushed myself forward, there was someone who never stopped believing in me.

He smiled softly.

My wife.

The screen behind him lit up, revealing the product name in elegant letters.

REBA.

This product, Sheldon continued, is named after the woman who stood by me when I had nothing to offer but uncertainty. Reba Carter is not just my wifeshe is my foundation.

Applause erupted.

Of course, he added smoothly, our brand ambassador, Stacey, has contributed tremendously to our success over the past two years. Her professionalism and dedication helped bring this product to life.

Stacey smiled graciously from her seat.

But success, Sheldon said, his voice lowering, is never built alone. No husband can thrive without his wifes support.

Tonights launch is not just business. It is a birthday gift. An anniversary gift. A thank-you.

He lifted his glass.

To my wife, Reba Carter. Everything I am today exists because of you.

Thunderous applause filled the hall.

After the speech, the MC announced the interview session.

The first reporter stood up immediately. Mr. Carter, may I askwhy hasnt Mrs. Carter arrived yet?

The question struck closer than Sheldon liked. It echoed the unease already clawing at his chest.

He laughed lightly. I told Reba to dress as beautifully as possible tonight. It is her special day.

He shrugged playfully. So lets be patient. You know how long it takes a woman just to finish showering, right?

Laughter rolled across the room, especially from the men.

As they say, Sheldon added with a confident smile, the best surprises always come at the end. So please, enjoy the night.

Applause followed him as he stepped down from the stage.

At that moment, his phone rang.

His secretary.

He frowned and answered. What is it?

Her voice came through, shaking. Sir you need to come to the hospital right now.

His irritation flared. Why was nothing going his way tonight?

Cant you handle it yourself? he snapped. Dont you know what day this is?

There was a pause. Then her voice dropped, trembling.

But, sirthe victim you hit with your car today she said quietly. The victims ID it belongs to your wife!
