Secret Boyfriend Reveal, The Girl In My Heels
I had been in a secret relationship with Miles Sterling, my best friend's younger brother, for a whole year.
He claimed he was too shy to go public, so we agreed to wait a year before telling his sister the truth.
On our first anniversary, Miles sent me a text: Come over for dinner tonight. I want to make our relationship official.
I showed up at the Sterling house full of hope, only to find a fragile-looking girl sitting right next to him.
She was the girlfriend Miles was planning to reveal to the world.
I took a deep breath, forced a smile, and greeted them. "Hey there, little brother. And hello to your new girlfriend."
Suddenly, he looked like he was about to have a panic attack.
On our anniversary, Miles sent me a message: "Come over for dinner tonight. I want to make our relationship official."
I clutched my phone, feeling a mix of pure joy and intense relief. Finally, I didn't have to hide the truth from my best friend anymore.
Miles is my best friend's little brother, and we had been dating in the shadows for a year.
When we first started seeing each other, he was always so insecure, worried I'd dump him. We made a pact to wait a year until we were stable before telling his sister, Hannah.
Now, he was finally keeping his promise.
I called him immediately, but the line just rang and rang. It took three tries before he finally picked up.
"Hey, what's up?" Miles's voice was completely flat, almost cold.
"I just wanted to ask, what should I wear tonight? Is it a fancy vibe or something more casual?"
I figured his parents might be there. If it was a formal dinner, I needed to pick out a dress and a decent gift.
"Whatever, it doesn't matter. Look, I'm busy right now, so I have to go. Let's talk later."
He sounded totally distracted, like I was an annoyance.
Before I could say another word, he hung up on me.
I stared at the screen, confused. He was the one who invited me over to go public, so why did he act like he didn't care?
Maybe he was actually slammed at work?
Before I could overthink it, my best friend Hannah started blowing up my phone with texts.
"OMG! Major news! My brother is bringing home the mysterious girl he's been hiding for a year! Dinner tonight!"
"It's a full reveal. You have to be there to help me grill her!"
I could practically see Hannah's excited, gossiping face. I hesitated for a second before typing back.
"Actually, I was planning on introducing you to my boyfriend today, too."
Hannah replied with a string of exclamation points.
"!!! Is today National Couples Day or something? Bring him along! My parents are out of town anyway."
"It's a plan. Don't you dare flake!"
I agreed, of course. Since the Sterling parents weren't home, I didn't go overboard. I did my makeup, threw on a cute outfit, and caught an Uber.
Standing in front of their door, I felt a strange wave of anxiety. I shook it off, assuming I was just nervous about Hannah being mad that I'd kept the secret so long.
I knocked, and Hannah swung the door open instantly, giving me a playful, knowing wink.
I thought Miles had already told her everything, so I blushed and handed her the fruit basket I brought. She took it to the kitchen.
As I turned to put my bag on the rack, I froze.
There was a purse sitting on the shelf that was identical to the one I was carrying.
It definitely wasn't Hannah's. She usually went for a cool, edgy look, not this kind of elegant, expensive style.
On the shoe rack, there was a pair of white heels that matched the bag perfectly. They were tucked neatly right next to Miles's sneakers.
A cold realization started to sink in, but I didn't want to believe it yet.
Then, I heard a loud crash!
Miles was standing there with a bowl of fruit, staring at me like he'd seen a ghost. The bowl had shattered on the floor.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
He looked horrified, panicked, and maybe even a little guilty.
"Believe it or not, you're the one who invited me," I said, my voice feeling thick and bitter.
Miles's expression shifted between fear and anger. He turned toward the living room and shouted.
"Hannah! Mia! I dropped a bowl. There's glass everywhere, so don't come over here!"
Then, he grabbed my arm and shoved me toward the door.
"When did you find out? Did you show up today just to humiliate me?"
I looked at himDthis man trying to look tough while his hands shook. I suddenly wanted to laugh.
I laughed until tears nearly stung my eyes.
I had known the Sterling siblings for over a decade. We grew up together.
I knew his embarrassing childhood stories and all his favorite things. I thought I knew everything about him.
But it turns out, I didn't know him at all.
"Miles, your sister said you were bringing your secret girlfriend home for dinner. She's in the living room, isn't she?"
"I'm just curious. If this Mia girl is your girlfriend, then what exactly am I?"
Miles shifted his gaze, unable to look me in the eye. After a long silence, he finally spoke.
"I'm sorry, okay? But today is really important for me and Mia. Can you just not cause a scene?"
My heart took a sharp hit, but I didn't let it show. I pressed him. "So, she's the one you're going public with? Not me?"
Miles bit his lip and kept his head down. Finally, he gave a slow, pathetic nod.
I let out a self-deprecating laugh. I wasn't just laughing at Miles anymore; I was laughing at how stupid I had been.
With one nod, he had stripped me of my title and turned our entire year of romance into a bad joke.
"Look, maybe you should just leave," Miles said, his voice full of audacity.
Before I could even respond, Hannah burst into the hallway.
"Miles! What the hell are you saying to her? I'm the one who invited Jade!"
She hopped over the glass shards and smacked Miles on the back of the head.
"Are you seriously being shy around Jade? Are you that embarrassed? She's basically your sister!"
Hannah had no clue what was going on. She smiled and looped her arm through mine.
My legs felt like jelly, but I used Hannah's strength to keep myself upright.
"She's right, Miles. I want to meet your girl. Don't be so stingy," I said, looking him straight in the eyes.
From the living room, a soft, dainty voice called out. "Miles? Can you come here? I think my blood sugar is getting low."
Miles didn't even look back at me. He rushed to the living room, his voice dripping with concern. "What's wrong, Mia? Do we need to go to the ER?"
Hannah was worried too, so she pulled me along into the living room.
There she was. A girl in a white sundress, looking like a fragile little bird as she leaned into Miles's arms.
She gave us a perfectly timed, apologetic smile. "I'm so sorry. I skipped lunch and got a bit lightheaded. A piece of candy should fix it."
Then, she turned her eyes toward me. "And who is this?"
Miles spoke up quickly, terrified she would suspect something. "She's a friend of my sister's."
"We aren't really close."
......
Not close?
That was hilarious.
The truth is, I never thought I'd end up dating Miles.
I'm three years older than him. I watched him go from a crying toddler to a dorky teenager. Before he confessed, I never even saw him as a man.
Everything changed one winter night two years ago.
I had a terrible flu and had worked late. I found Miles shivering outside my apartment door.
I didn't know how long he'd been waiting or how nervous he was to ask when I'd be home.
He lit up the moment he saw me. He pulled a bouquet of roses from under his coat, worried they'd wilt in the cold. He didn't care that he was freezing.
At his feet was a massive bag filled with every cold medicine imaginable.
"Jade, I saw your post. I don't want you to be sick and alone anymore. I don't want to hide how much I care about you. I love you."
He was so sincere, so vulnerable.
Back then, I just thought he'd lost his mind from the cold.
I laughed it off and tried to go inside, but he grabbed me from behind. I turned and saw his eyes were red. He sounded like he was about to cry.
"Jade, please. Don't reject me."
"I'm begging you..."
In that moment, something in me softened. The way he looked at me made me realize he wasn't just the kid from next door anymore. He was a man.
I still didn't say yes right away. I turned him down pretty hard because we were just too closeDit felt weird.
But he didn't give up. He spent an entire year chasing me.
He was always there when I needed him. He'd show up with an umbrella on rainy days or bring me heating pads and snacks when I was on my period.
He was like a loyal puppy with big, clear eyes, always waiting for me. "Jade! Over here!"
I got used to him being the center of my world.
So, the next time he asked me to be his girlfriend, I finally said yes.
Thinking back, Miles really did have his moments. But now, apparently, we "aren't close."
I sat on the far end of the sofa, watching him gently unwrap a candy and feed it to Mia. The way he looked at her was hauntingly familiar.
"Ugh, you guys are so cute I might throw up!" Hannah joked.
"Mia, give me the tea. Who chased who? I need details!"
Mia blushed and looked down. "Oh, I don't know if I should say..."
Miles immediately got protective. "Hannah, stop being a busybody. Mia's shy, okay? Back off."
"Don't be mean to your sister, Miles," Mia said, playfully pinching his arm. He went quiet instantly.
I took a sip of my tea, feeling a wave of regret for staying. I didn't come here to watch a low-budget romance movie.
"Actually, Miles chased me for about six months," Mia started, her shy persona suddenly disappearing as she got into the details.
The more she talked, the more my stomach turned. It was the same story.
The cold medicine and roses in the winter, the umbrella in the rain, the mid-cycle care packages, the late-night rides home when she couldn't get an Uber.
He used the exact same moves on her.
He had tested them out on me, realized they worked, and then just copy-pasted the whole routine onto Mia.
Mia was still lost in her "romantic" memories.
"And the best part? He actually stood in line for hours to get me this designer bag. The one I brought today. It's so sweet that a guy would do that."
Mia practically purred as she snuggled back into Miles's chest.
I was speechless. He hadn't just cheated; he had bought us the exact same gift.
He was a lazy, unoriginal bastard.
"Oh, and he even got me front-row tickets to that huge concert for the singer J. He's so thoughtful."
The concert? Front row?
He had begged me to buy those tickets for his birthday because they were so expensive.
I couldn't even afford a second ticket for myself.
The truth was out. He had used me to get things to impress someone else.
My year of devotion wasn't just a mistakeDit was a tragedy.
But as the pieces clicked together, the pain in my chest went numb. It was time to cut my losses.
I noticed Miles's face turning a sickly shade of green. He was terrified I'd expose him.
I smiled thinly and decided to speak my mind.
"You know, Mia, that bag isn't actually that hard to find. I have the same one. You can usually just find a personal shopper online if you pay a little extra. And concert tickets are just money. A man's heart is worth more than that."
Mia's eyes snapped to mine, filled with instant jealousy and spite.
I had a feeling she was the one who used Miles's phone to invite me tonight. She wasn't some innocent little flower.
Sure enough, she started her attack. "Hannah told me you're seeing someone too, Jade?"
"Is he a younger guy? Around Miles's age?"
"Why isn't he here? How did you two meet? I'm so curious."
Mia put on her best innocent face while gripping Miles's arm like a vise.
Hannah, still clueless, chimed in. "Yeah, Jade! You said your boyfriend was coming. When is he getting here?"
"You've been so secretive about it. I really want to see this sweet younger guy you've been talking about!"
I went silent, not knowing what to say.
Miles, however, suddenly snapped. "Hannah! Why are you so obsessed with other people's business? Can you just shut up for once?"
Hannah looked shocked at his tone.
Mia jumped in to play peacemaker. "Don't be mad at her, Miles. You're just worried about Jade. Maybe she only said she had a boyfriend so people wouldn't laugh at her. It would be so embarrassing if she was lying."
I bit my lip, thinking for a second. Then I smiled. "Actually, I haven't told him to come up yet. Since everyone is so curious, I'll call him now."
Hannah cheered, while Miles and Mia looked incredibly uncomfortable.
I pulled out my phone, found a contact, and hit dial.
"Hey. Can you come over for a bit?" I asked, my heart racing.
On the other end, a low, smooth voice chuckled. "For you? I'm already on my way."
Hannah was hovering so close she heard the whole thing.
She looked like she'd just watched the finale of a romance show. She turned to Miles and Mia. "He said, 'For you? I'm already on my way!' So romantic!"
Miles's face went pale, his eyes darkening with something that looked a lot like rage.
I ignored them and spoke softly into the phone to Jasper Hale.
"Okay. I'll send you the pin."
Jasper arrived incredibly fast. When the door opened, even I was a little stunned.
I'd never seen him dressed like this before. He was in a sharp suit, looking every bit the powerful, handsome man.
But the moment he saw me, he flashed that signature smile, those little dimples making him look so charming.
"Am I late, babe?"
"Please tell me you aren't mad."
"I brought your favorite fruit to make it up to you."
Jasper was holding a box of expensive cherries. He handed them to Hannah and naturally went to the kitchen to wash them for everyone.
He acted like we were really in a relationship and he was just running late for a double date.
Then, he sat down right next to me, glancing at Miles and Mia.
"You feeling better now?"
Jasper leaned in close, his breath warm against my ear.
I instinctively leaned away, blushing. "Much better. Thanks for coming."
Miles was staring at us, his eyes nearly popping out of his head. He suddenly jumped up.
"Are you two serious? Get a room! This is a house, not a cheap motel!"
Miles was being incredibly rude, but I just gave him a cool look and laughed.
"Miles, you were literally feeding your girlfriend candy two minutes ago. Why are you so worked up? Are you upset that I'm happy?"
Miles looked like he'd been slapped. He couldn't make a scene without outing himself, so he just sat back down, seething.
Mia, sensing the tension, grabbed a mango from the table and held it out.
"Jade, don't be mad. Miles just doesn't know how to talk to girls. Here, have some fruit."
The moment she reached out, two hands blocked her.
One was Miles, who grabbed her wrist.
The other was Jasper, who blocked the fruit.
"She can't eat mangoes."
"She's allergic."
They both spoke at the exact same time.
Miles glared at Jasper, his face turning even colder. He huffed, put the mango back, and pointedly interlaced his fingers with Mia's.
Hannah sat there, completely baffled.
Hannah tried to get the conversation back on track. "So, how did you two meet? Give us the story!"
I didn't want Jasper to feel awkward, so I gave a simplified version.
Jasper and I are basically colleagues. Our companies do a lot of business together, and we'd met at several team-building events and game nights.
Jasper had terrible luck at those games. He always ended up as the 'villain,' and since I was an experienced player, I'd always catch him.
I used to tease him and make him call me "ma'am" as a joke.
Over time, we started playing mobile games together online and became friendly.
But after the project ended and I started dating Miles, I stopped seeing Jasper. We were just internet friends, really.
Truthfully, I didn't know him that well.
And yet, he showed up the moment I called him for help.
I looked at Jasper, feeling a wave of gratitude. If he hadn't come, I would have had to run out of there in total humiliation.
"Jade?"
Jasper spoke softly.
I realized I had been staring at him. His ears were actually turning a little pink.
Wait, was he shy?
"Jade, why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?"
I felt a bit playful. I smiled. "No. I just realized you're actually really handsome."
Jasper saw the mischief in my eyes. He gritted his teeth slightly, looking both annoyed and embarrassed. "Jade... stop."
Miles couldn't take it anymore. He jumped up again, looking like he was about to explode with jealousy.
"Enough! You're seriously doing this in my house? My house is no place for some random guy you just picked up!"
"Jasper is my boyfriend. If he's not welcome, I'm not welcome."
"Fine, we're leaving. We have a date to get to anyway."
I didn't wait for a response. I didn't even look at Miles's purple face. I just stood up to go.
"Wait!"
Jasper suddenly stopped me.
His expression turned serious, completely different from the shy guy from a moment ago. He knelt down in front of me and gently lifted my foot.
I felt a bit awkward and tried to pull back.
"Don't move. Your ankle is bleeding. When did this happen? Did you not feel it?"
"What?"
I looked down. My white sock was stained with a patch of blood. I realized then that when Miles smashed the bowl, a piece of glass must have nicked me. I had been so stressed I hadn't even noticed.
The cut wasn't deep, but because it had been ignored, it had bled quite a bit.
Miles stammered, "I... I must have hit you when I dropped the bowl earlier."
Jasper's face darkened. He gave Miles a cold, distant look. "Since we aren't welcome here, I'm taking her to get this cleaned up."
Before I could protest, Jasper swept me up into his arms, carrying me bridal-style. He had a look in his eyes that said he wasn't taking no for an answer.
I blushed. "I can walk..."
He acted like he didn't even hear me.
Before we left, Hannah ran over with some antiseptic and Band-Aids, apologizing and promising she'd deal with Miles later.
I didn't care. That part of my life was over.
Once we were outside, I gasped. "My bag! I left it inside."
Jasper looked at me with a look of pure adoration. "Forget it. I'll buy you a new one and everything that was inside it. That bag was ugly anyway."
I realized then that he'd noticed the matching bags. He probably figured out the whole drama.
He didn't say it out loud, though. He was protecting my dignity.
"Why are you crying? Does it hurt that much?"
Jasper asked, his voice full of concern.
