The Sketch on His Skin, My Replacement

The Sketch on His Skin, My Replacement

I spotted a rare, vintage bottle in my private wine cellar.

Before our anniversary, I called the manager to set it aside for a special night.

But he told me my wife had already gifted it to an important business partner for the New Year.

Feeling a bit let down, I teased her that evening.

Why give the premium stuff to a stranger instead of your own husband?

She sent over a few other bottles from the cellar to comfort me that night.

A few days later, I went to a birthday party for a friend's new acquaintance.

The host greeted me with a smile, holding the exact bottle I had wanted.

Then I noticed the tattoo on his wristDa mix of letters and numbers.

It was my wife's initials and her birthday.

1.

I've never been a particularly observant man.

But the moment I saw Caspian, I felt a deep, unsettling connection between him and my wife.

He looked almost exactly like the charcoal sketch Seraphina used as her profile picture.

He wore a dark, perfectly tailored suit that made him look tall and sharp.

Beneath his left eye was a tear-shaped mole, a perfect mirror of my own.

I instinctively touched my mole, a chill running down my spine.

"Hey, Silas, why do you and Caspian look so much alike? Same style, same face!"

My friend's joke felt like a bucket of ice water over my head.

My clothes, my shoes, even my haircut were all curated by Seraphina.

Could a coincidence really be this precise?

Caspian smiled modestly. "I guess handsome men just share the same vibe."

He pulled out his phone. "Silas, mind if we exchange contacts? We should grab a drink sometime."

I suppressed my doubts and pulled out my phone.

His profile picture flashed on the screenDit was that exact sketch!

My breath hitched, and my fingertips began to tremble.

"Is something wrong?" Caspian asked, noticing my reaction.

I shook my head silently and clicked "Add."

His face remained calm, as if he were completely unaware of these strange overlaps.

Or maybe, he had planned every single detail.

The anxiety in my chest began to grow like wild weeds.

I wanted to ask him what his relationship was with my wife.

But then I saw a group of Seraphina's friends whispering nearby.

I remembered Seraphina saying she was attending an "important gala" tonight.

She told me it was a private girls' night and that husbands weren't invited.

I even joked about how sexist that sounded in this day and age.

She just laughed it off, saying I'd be bored surrounded by women.

Was this the "private gala" she was talking about?

As if on cue, Seraphina appeared in the crowd.

2.

She wore a stunning red silk dress that made her skin look like porcelain.

With her usual elegant smile, she walked gracefully toward us.

When her eyes met Caspian's, a visible spark seemed to fly between them.

But when her gaze shifted to me, her smile instantly froze.

For a few seconds, a thousand emotions flickered across her face.

She recovered quickly, pulling that familiar, gentle mask back on.

She walked over, tucked her arm into mine, and asked naturally.

"Honey, what are you doing here? I just came along to keep Brenda company."

Brenda was one of the women in her social circle.

I quietly pulled my arm away and replied coldly.

"I'm just here for a tasting with some friends."

Caspian chuckled, raising his glass. "Silas, drink as much as you like. I have plenty of this wineDmore than I could ever finish."

His tone was polite, but I heard the underlying gloat and provocation.

Seraphina didn't look at Caspian for the rest of the time, treating him like a stranger.

She stayed perfectly poised, chatting with everyone else.

Caspian also avoided our eyes, acting like a perfect, disinterested gentleman.

I couldn't tell if they were incredible actors or if I was truly overthinking it.

Maybe they had a past, but it was long over.

Having a past wasn't a crime, as long as she loved me now.

I started to feel foolish for being so paranoid.

I was looking for a chance to talk to her privately when things went south.

A child suddenly darted out of the crowd and crashed into Caspian.

Caspian stumbled back, losing his balance right at the edge of the stairs.

Without a second thought, Seraphina shoved me aside and lunged forward.

She caught Caspian, holding him tightly.

"Cas! Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"

3.

The force of her shove caught me off guard, and I tumbled down the stairs.

My forehead slammed against a hard step, and a blinding pain took over.

"Seraphina! How could you push Silas like that?" my friend Leo shouted.

Seraphina finally realized what she had done as I lay at the bottom.

She rushed down, her face pale with guilt as she checked my wound.

"Silas, I'm so sorry! I was just panicking... I didn't mean to..."

If she cared so much, why didn't she even look at me when I was falling?

I wondered how much of her concern was genuine and how much was a performance.

She frantically insisted on taking me to the hospital, her eyes full of tears.

Caspian chimed in weakly from above, "I think I twisted my ankle. Seraphina, could you take me too?"

Seraphina didn't even hesitate before snapping back coldly. "Find someone else, Mr. Drake."

Her focus was locked on me, as if nothing else in the world existed.

She called the driver and held my hand, whispering sweet words of comfort.

I forced a smile and turned to Caspian.

"Sorry, my wife gets a little overprotective when I'm hurt."

Caspian's face went pale, and he managed a sickly grin. "I'm jealous of how much you two love each other."

Seraphina acted perfectly normal, showing no signs of guilt.

But she was gripping my hand so hard I thought she might break my bones.

On the way to the hospital, she seemed completely distracted.

I looked at her, thinking back on our three years of marriage.

It started as a business arrangement, but it had turned surprisingly sweet.

She rarely talked about her past and was always warm and attentive.

I used to think I was the luckiest man alive to have such a happy home.

Now, I realized that entire foundation might be built on lies.

After getting patched up, we went home, and she brought me a glass of milk.

I pushed the glass away coldly. "I'm allergic to dairy, Seraphina."

She froze, looking embarrassed.

"I'm sorry, honey. I guess I'm just shaken up from today."

I stared at her, feeling like I was looking at a complete stranger.

She made an excuse to shower, and I headed straight for the study.

Out of respect, I had never touched her private laptop, but now I had to know.

Her friend list was small, and her chat history was almost empty.

Then I found her hidden digital journalDnearly two thousand entries, all private.

They were all letters to Caspian, spanning from teenage crushes to bitter longing.

The earliest was from seven years ago; the latest was from just three days ago.

For seven years, she claimed to love me while keeping another man in her heart.

The final entry was the one that broke me.

"If he didn't look so much like you, I couldn't stand being near him."

"Maybe God pitied my broken heart and gave me a substitute to hold."

I felt a suffocating pain in my chest and had to lean against the desk to stay upright.

"Silas? Where are you?"

Seraphina's voice came from the hallway, as sweet and tender as always.

Silas and Caspian. The names sounded so similar when she whispered them.

When she called for me, who was she really seeing in her mind?

4.

I picked up a tablet and walked out, acting as casual as possible.

"Right here. I was just grabbing the tablet to watch a movie."

Seraphina stood at the door, her expression slightly off.

"It's late. Let's just go to bed."

Not long after we lay down, her phone buzzed twice.

She checked it and sat up, her voice tinged with panic.

"There's an emergency at the office. I have to go. Go back to sleep."

I wanted to reach out and ask what kind of emergency happens at midnight.

But her eyes were glued to the screen, ignoring me completely.

In the past, I would have been supportive and stayed out of her business.

Tonight, I wanted to scream, but the words stayed stuck in my throat.

She didn't wait for an answer, throwing on a coat and rushing out without even changing.

I thought I knew her better than anyone after three years.

I never imagined she was capable of hiding such a deep, dark obsession.

I pulled out my phone and opened the "Find My" app.

Seraphina's location was moving fast toward a specific neighborhood.

Thirty minutes later, the green dot stopped at Caspian Drake's penthouse.

Everything was finally, painfully clear.

I checked Caspian's social media, and a new post appeared.

It was a photo of a woman's back as she stood in a kitchen, cooking.

The caption read: "When you're here, all my shadows disappear."

The woman wore a lace nightgown, and though her face was hidden, I knew her.

That signature wavy hair belonged to my wife, Seraphina.

I let out a bitter laugh and stared at the ceiling in the dark.

What now? Divorce? Revenge?

A thousand thoughts raced through my mind, but eventually, I felt a strange calm.

Maybe letting go was the only way to survive.

5.

Seraphina didn't come home until nearly noon the next day, looking quite satisfied.

"I brought you breakfast," she said, waving a takeout container.

She opened it to reveal the same savory liver stew she had posted on Caspian's feed.

The container was half-empty, looking messy and smelling incredibly strong.

I smiled thinly. "Where did you get this? And why is it in a thermos?"

Her face flickered for a second. "I wanted to make sure it stayed hot for you."

"Keep it. I don't eat liver," I said, feeling my stomach turn.

She frowned, sounding annoyed. "What is with you? You've been acting weird since yesterday."

Just then, our housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, walked in and sniffed the air.

"Ma'am, where did that come from? It smells like it's been sitting out all night."

Seraphina's eyes darted around in a panic.

"I just bought it down the street. Maybe it's not fresh."

"Throw it out, Mrs. Gable. I have to get to work."

I nodded with a fake smile. "Drive safe."

We have a full-time staff; she has never cared about my breakfast before.

I checked my phone again, and Caspian had updated his status.

A photo of the leftover stew with the caption: "Tastes like trash now. Feeding it to the dog."

I guess I've been too nice over the years if every stray thinks he can piss on me.

I narrowed my eyes, changed my clothes, and headed out.

6.

Before the workday even ended, Seraphina stormed into my office.

She was fuming. "Silas! Did you touch my computer?"

I leaned back, not bothering to deny it. "Yes."

"Did you read those journals?"

"Every single word."

"How dare you!"

She slammed her hand on my desk, her beautiful face twisted with rage.

"If you have a problem, take it out on me! Why did you go after Caspian?"

"Why did you go to his house and harass him? He struggles with depression, and you've triggered a relapse!"

I was stunned by her sheer audacity.

I remembered her as gentle, rational, and composed.

Now, she was acting like a crazed woman over a man she was cheating with.

She was willing to destroy the last shred of our dignity for Caspian.

I let out a sharp laugh.

Based solely on Caspian's lies, she assumed I was the villain without even asking me.

"Do you have any proof that I even saw him today?"

"Or are you just taking his word for it because he's your soulmate?"

She hesitated, her brow furrowed, before softening her tone.

"Caspian doesn't lie. You can't bully him just because of the past."

"He hasn't done anything wrong. You should go and apologize to him."

I looked at this woman and felt nothing.

I remembered her holding my hand, saying she wanted a marriage full of love.

I remembered her trying to get pregnant, smiling through morning sickness.

And now, she was standing here, barking at me for the sake of another man.

I realized that my love for her was officially dead.

If people can change this much, why should my feelings stay the same?

Nobody is indispensable.

I felt a sudden weight lift off my shoulders and leaned back with a genuine smile.

Seeing my smile made her freeze, and a wave of unease crossed her eyes.

She sensed that she was losing control over me.

"If you really don't want to apologize, I guess it's fine..."

She stammered, her fingers gripping her sleeve until her knuckles turned white.

I pulled a pre-signed divorce settlement from my drawer and slid it across the desk.

"Let's get a divorce. Go be with the man you actually want."
